The exploration begins with heritage expert Jerome Lim shedding light on Jurong's origins. In the 1960s, Jurong was intentionally developed as Singapore’s first industrial estate to combat unemployment and drive economic growth. Taman Jurong was built in 1963-64 as the first residential neighborhood within this industrial zone, primarily to house workers. The government adopted a strategy of creating a self-sufficient community where work and living spaces were integrated, complete with entertainment options like the Taman Jurong Theater and drive-in cinemas.
