The Philippines claims parts of the Spratlys, notably the northeastern segment, known locally as Kalayaan. The Philippines lacks the military might of larger powers like China or Vietnam but benefits from strategic partnerships, particularly with the United States. The U.S. has committed to defending the Philippines under existing treaties and has increased its military presence, including access to Philippine bases.
