In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Telok Ayer was home to elite social clubs, clan associations, and cultural groups. Noteworthy among these are the various clubs on Club Street—original aristocratic clubs that hosted lavish gatherings reminiscent of the Gilded Age. These clubs served as vital networking hubs for Singapore’s wealthy and influential Chinese, Straits Chinese, and other communities.
