The repercussions of the Green Revolution are particularly evident in groundwater overuse. In Punjab, more than 70% of the cultivated land relies on groundwater, much of it extracted via subsidized electricity for pumps. A 2020 assessment indicates that much of Punjab's aquifers have been overexploited, with the state capable of sustaining groundwater for only 17 more years. Farmers, in pursuit of higher yields, dig deeper, further accelerating resource depletion.
