Part 10/14:
Despite the alarming proliferation of such crimes, existing laws in India are ill-equipped to handle the nuances of AI-related crimes. The Information Technology Act lacks specific provisions targeting deepfake creation, voice cloning, or AI-generated defamation and extortion. Current laws like Section 66D (identity theft) have limited penalties and do not adequately address the scale or sophistication of AI crimes.
Law enforcement is often hampered by jurisdictional issues—many cybercriminal operations are concentrated in remote or difficult-to-access regions like parts of North-East India. These areas are used as hubs for scams due to relaxed policing and strategic locations that evade detection.
