Part 4/14:
The attacks have caused ships to be boarded or hit with missiles and drones, with casualties reported, including sailors killed aboard the vessels. While some of these assaults have been responded to by US, Indian, and other naval forces, the persistent threat has led to widespread rerouting of commercial shipping.
Disruption of Global Trade and Supply Chains
The security crisis has led shipping companies to avoid the Red Sea entirely, rerouting vessels around the Cape of Good Hope—adding roughly 10 to 15 days to voyages and increasing fuel consumption, insurance premiums, and operational costs. As a result, Egypt’s port revenue has already declined by approximately 30%, and global shipping rates for containers have surged two to four times since December.
