Part 6/14:
Critics argue that Bond’s masculinity is exaggerated and that the character embodies a fantasy for both men and women—men aspire to his daring, while women admire his charisma and bravado. Mirren’s critique raises the question: why should the modern reimagining of Bond restrict itself to outdated notions of gender roles? If the morality debate is about sexism, then one might also consider the morality of gratuitous violence, which is prevalent in many of these films. Mirren, after all, is starring in Mob Land, a show saturated with violent content, seemingly inconsistent with her critique of sexism.
