Indonesia’s path to resilience requires sustained effort. Upgrading building codes, retrofitting existing structures, and expanding early warning systems are critical steps. While progress has been made since the 2004 disaster, challenges linger—chiefly, securing adequate funding, overcoming bureaucratic inertia, and fostering a culture of preparedness.
Moreover, integrating local traditions and natural buffers, such as mangroves and coastal vegetation, can serve as vital components of secondary defenses. Community education, drills, and the dissemination of accurate warnings are essential to reducing casualties.
