Historically, seismic activity is common in West Sumatra. Records date back to 1797, with over 800 earthquakes of magnitude four or higher occurring within 300 kilometers off the coast in the past decade alone. The area is situated above the Sunda Megathrust—an 5,500-kilometer fault boundary where the Indo-Australian plate subducts beneath the Eurasian plate—making Indonesia one of the most seismically active countries in the world.
