Another crucial question is: What happens if Tesla manages to activate full autonomous driving on existing Hardware 3 cars? Currently, roughly 4.5 million Tesla vehicles are equipped with Hardware 3, capable of FSD as software updates improve.
Tesla’s engineers are confident they can produce a lightweight version of FSD that will work on Hardware 3, enabling these cars to join the robo taxi fleet. Upgrading these vehicles, Tesla could bring hundreds of thousands of cars into service without waiting for new hardware.
