In an interview with GQ, Cody revealed that she was initially brought on in 2017–2018 to write a draft for the Barbie film. However, she struggled to produce a screenplay because of conflicting directives: Hollywood was calling for a “girl boss feminist twist,” but she argued that this was fundamentally misaligned with Barbie’s core iconography. Cody explained:

“They wanted a girl boss feminist twist on Barbie, and I couldn’t figure it out because that’s not what Barbie is.… I failed so hard at that project.”
