Bach's central idea, the machine consciousness hypothesis, suggests that consciousness in machines can be systematically tested and potentially built by understanding it as an emergent property of certain functional conditions. He proposes a two-pronged approach:

• Organismic consciousness hypothesis: consciousness in living organisms results from specific organizational principles.

• Recreation hypothesis: these same organizational conditions can be recreated in artificial systems, leading to machine consciousness.
