The project has successfully created approximately 17 acres of restored reef area, with over 150 million oysters reintroduced into the harbor. These reefs offer more than ecological benefit; they also serve educational and research functions, fostering a deeper understanding of marine life recovery.
Monitoring and Research: Understanding Ecosystem Recovery
Numerous oyster research stations—essentially miniature reefs—are deployed throughout the harbor to monitor the oysters’ growth, survival, and the surrounding biodiversity. These stations provide insights into how well oysters are thriving and what ecological shifts are occurring.
