Chinese policies, such as extensive fishing restrictions in inland waterways like the Yangtze River, attempt to mitigate some issues domestically; however, the surge in overseas fishing has contributed to environmental degradation and the loss of livelihoods for traditional fishers.
Filipino and Vietnamese fishermen watch helplessly as Chinese fleets dominate their traditional fishing grounds, often destroying their boats or forcing them to abandon their vessels. This situation has led to increased resentment and calls for stronger government action to defend their territorial and economic rights.
