The tension culminated in a violent riot on July 12, 1963. It began when detainees, angry over forced labor, conditions, and perceived injustices—such as the punishment of carpenters for refusing overtime—decided to strike. Led by members of secret societies, they armed themselves with machetes, hoes, and other weapons, storming the settlement in a frenzied attack.
