Part 2/9:
Dr. Sunny Wong, director of the Center for Microbiomedicine, explains that the gut microbiome comprises bacteria, viruses, and fungi that are vital for maintaining our health. These microorganisms assist with digestion, ward off infections, and even influence our mood and energy levels. Importantly, each individual has a unique microbiome that evolves throughout life based on aging, diet, and lifestyle. Disruptions can occur due to illnesses; for instance, those suffering from Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease tend to have a reduced diversity of gut bacteria compared to healthier individuals.
