The pandemic has intensified xenophobia and anti-foreigner sentiments in Malaysia. COVID-19-related fears led to scapegoating of migrant communities, including refugees from Myanmar. Reports of raids, arrests, and deportations increased during this period. Politicians and media often portray refugees as security threats, undermining the historically tolerant attitude Malaysia once maintained toward asylum seekers.
