The show’s attempt to balance action, comedy, and social commentary fails spectacularly. For example, some fight scenes are underwhelming, with Riri barely putting up a fight against much larger foes who then dominate her effortlessly. Her depiction as a genius who could have sold patents for billions is undermined by her decision to join criminal gangs and steal tech, further emphasizing her irresponsibility.
Scenes featuring representation are often awkward, such as displays of women of color sparring in fast-food joints, or talking about their lived experiences at inopportune moments. These moments embody the worst stereotypes and bad writing, making the show feel more like a political statement than a fun superhero series.
