Part 8/11:
Haunted Mansion stands out as perhaps the most disastrous of the year. With a production budget around $150 million and marketing costs estimated at $65–$75 million, its total expense likely approached $200 million.
Box office receipts were a mere $53 million in North America, with modest overseas revenue, bringing the total gross close to $107 million. However, the total revenue Disney received—including streaming, TV rights, and physical media sales—is estimated to be only around $50 million.
All these figures point towards a net loss of approximately $150–$200 million—a colossal failure for any blockbuster, and especially for a Disney property rooted in its iconic franchise.
