Dara Torres has been an athlete from a young age. Growing up with a background in softball for ten years, her father recognized her athletic potential and encouraged her to pursue crew (rowing). Her sports journey took her from softball to rowing, where she competed in multiple national championships, and eventually to swimming—an area where she would leave an indelible mark.

She recalled the competitive spirit she carried into crew, coxing (leading the team) and racing throughout Virginia Beach and Virginia, participating in national events in places like Philadelphia and Jersey. Her dedication to rowing was intense, with early morning practices and sacrifices, but eventually, she shifted her focus, citing burnout and the rigors of early mornings as reasons for stepping back.
