A central debate is whether Tesla’s AI approach is a pathway toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Philbert suggests that by enabling AI systems to learn from non-human, real-world environment data at scale, Tesla is laying the groundwork for systems that can understand, perceive, and adapt independently—not just imitate humans.

He argues that the vast sensor-fed datasets collected by Tesla vehicles—truly raw "photon to control" inputs—offer an advantage over language models trained solely on human-generated text. Tesla's AI can, therefore, develop a form of grounded understanding akin to a physical "perception" of the world.
