Tesla’s more sophisticated cooling system certainly demands higher manufacturing costs. It involves additional machining, specialized passages within the motor, and an onboard pump. However, this extra complexity allows Tesla to achieve superior efficiency, which translates into extended range and better performance over time.
Conversely, GM’s gravity-based system is less expensive to produce and easier to maintain. It’s well-suited for medium-range electric SUVs like the Equinox, where cost competitiveness trumps maximum performance. Yet, this simplicity comes with limitations. During prolonged stationary periods or in extremely hot environments, the cooling efficacy may decline, potentially impacting longevity and reliability.
