Another captivating story from Ricky's career involves fellow baseball player John Olerud while he played for the New York Mets. During their time as teammates, Ricky allegedly confused Olerud with another player who wore a helmet while on the field. Ricky innocently mentioned, “I used to play with somebody who also wore a helmet in the field,” to which Olerud, somewhat bewildered, had to remind Ricky that it was indeed him he was referring to—highlighting the humorous side of Ricky's memory.
