SMU’s quarterback, Kevin Jennings, struggled to find rhythm but did manage to connect with tight end Matthew Hibner for a key first down. Despite promising moments, Jennings was unable to capitalize on opportunities, culminating in several incomplete passes and a pivotal turnover when his pass was intercepted by Dominic Duca. This interception resulted in a pick-six, giving Penn State an early 7-0 lead.

As the first quarter progressed, Penn State began to prove they were more than just a team with a lead. Quarterback Drew Aller showcased impressive playing ability, displaying both passing and running skills. He completed crucial passes to Tyler Warren and Singleton, steadily pushing the team into SMU territory.
