Part 5/7:

The Evolution of Their Relationship

While initially a beneficial alliance, the arrival of Sauron and the establishment of his strongholds affected Shelob’s hunting grounds. The influx of orcs—who comprised much of Sauron’s forces—shifted the types of beings she encountered. The once bountiful remnants from which Shelob feasted were largely replaced by the less desirable orcs – a food source that left her famished and unsatisfied.

As Sauron’s power grew, so too did the darkness that enveloped the region, prompting Shelob to retreat further into the shadows. Tolkien highlights that, while Sauron didn’t directly control Shelob, the veil of darkness he wrapped around the area hindered the presence of more desirable prey.
