This first conflict, also referred to as the War of Powers, occurred before the dawn of the First Age during an era known as the Age of Trees. Its primary motivation was the protection of the newly awakened Elves, who first came to life in a region of Middle-earth called Cuiviénen under the stars near a sea known as Helcar. The Valar, powerful spirits, were unaware of the Elves’ awakening until Melkor, then still named Melkor, stumbled upon them during his travels.
