The story flashes back to Wave's painful experience in the eighth grade when he was belittled by a math teacher for not solving an equation. Wave asserts that the teacher made mistakes but is dismissed as "stupid" in front of his peers, reinforcing his sense of failure and isolation. The humiliation shapes his future actions, as he later confesses to a friend, Nam Tan, about another educator, Miss Nara, who initially encouraged him and even helped him gain admission into a scholarship program.
