A significant turning point occurs when Joy and Sadness become trapped in the vast storage of long-term memories, leading them on an adventurous quest to return to the control room. Throughout their journey, they meet Bing Bong, Riley's long-forgotten imaginary friend, whose whimsical essence adds to the movie's heartwarming moments.

As Riley attempts to adapt to her new life in San Francisco, she faces trials at school that push her emotional state to the brink. Joy struggles to keep Sadness from affecting Riley’s core memories, yet time and again, Sadness proves to have a crucial role in balancing Joy's incessant drive for happiness.
