The film opens in Riley's mind when she is a baby, revealing Joy as a fairy-like figure who manages her emotions. Joy is primarily focused on making Riley happy and creating joyful memories. As Riley grows, other emotions join the mix, with Fear taking charge to protect her from potential dangers, Anger ensuring her displeasure is voiced, and Disgust preventing her from eating undesirable foods.

Riley’s childhood is filled with joyful moments, particularly highlighted by her first ice hockey goal. Each happiness adds to an "island" of her personality: Family, Hockey, Friendship, Honesty, and Goofball. But when her parents announce a move from Minnesota to San Francisco, Riley’s world starts to shift dramatically.
