At first, Stubby is just a homeless dog, rummaging through garbage cans for food and encountering a harsh and indifferent world. Despite the abuse he often faces from cruel people, his spirit remains unbroken. In 1917, his life takes a fateful turn when he crosses paths with a platoon of American soldiers. When one soldier, Robert, throws him a cookie, Stubby finds a glimmer of hope and decides to follow Robert, despite the harsh realities of the life he has known.
