The headmistress, Mrs. Kingsley, and the head girl, Harriet, represent a stark contrast to the life Poppy has known. Her efforts to rebel—manifested in a modified school uniform and sarcasm towards the staff—lead her to various forms of punishment alongside her new dorm mates, Kate, Josie, Kiki, and Drippy.
