As the film develops, we see Turtle's character evolve from a complacent oppressor to one who is increasingly obsessed with controlling the humans, believing they can be trained to serve him. His decision to employ Johnny and fellow humans in gold mining operations sparks a turning point—while Turtle hopes to exploit them for their labor, Johnny begins to harbor aspirations of liberation.
