Upon entering the prison system, Papillon meets fellow inmate Julot and learns the way out often relies on significant funding. Around this time, he discovers Louis Dega, a wealthy counterfeiter who has hidden large sums of cash. Papillon approaches Dega, offering him security in exchange for financial support. Following a brutal attack on Dega, they strike up a partnership, although Dega is initially reluctant to join Papillon's escape plans.
