The narrative opens with Nick, a young boy seeking attention from his neglected parents. Ignored both by his father and his mother, who flirts with other men, this lack of parental affection sets a foreboding tone. Years later, following the death of his mother, Nick has seemingly grown into a successful chief surgeon, yet the shadows of his troubled past linger. At her funeral, Nick exhibits no sorrow, instead rushing to the hospital where he exhibits proficiency in his surgical role.
