The story opens with a typical high school graduation party. Dennis, portrayed as the classic awkward boy-next-door, has been harboring a deep crush on Beth Cooper, the school's popular and beautiful cheerleader. Encouraged by his friend Rich to seize the moment and express his feelings, Dennis takes to the stage to give a speech in front of the gathering.
