Chan's story begins with her on the eve of her engagement—an event dictated by her family's expectations rather than her desires. Haunted by a dream of her deceased parents, particularly her mother’s advice about finding her true path at university, Chan decides to take matters into her own hands. She sells her engagement gifts, dons her friend Nigh’s wedding dress, and makes a daring escape from her grandfather’s watchful eye.

When the groom discovers her absence and sends his men after her, Chan employs quick thinking and her changing appearance to evade capture. However, her escapade reveals the lengths to which she must go to assert her independence and discover her own identity apart from her family.
