However, this transitional phase was short-lived. Two dominant military factions soon vied for control: the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by Abdul Alberhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), commanded by General Hamdan Dalo, known by some as Heamemedi. The RSF’s origins lie in brutal Arab supremacist militia linked to the Janjawiid, a paramilitary force notorious for atrocities in Darfur. These two entities, ostensibly working together initially, quickly became competitors, escalating into open conflict over the country’s future.
