I can somewhat understand their sentiment. When I was in Japan there were several of my shipmates who were acting very disprespectfully and causing trouble. One of the things they did was to walk out of restaurants without paying their bill. Seriously?! That is why I was happy to be doing stuff on my own and not hanging out with troublemakers. When we were very young my parents started taking us places and teaching us how to behave properly in public.
Yeah, they have a point. This is more to do with the economic situation, AirBnB/high rents/digital nomads etc rather than the antisocial behaviour (although that isn't welcome either). It's not all due to foreigners though, but that is one part of the picture. Either way, there is a big situation to be addressed and has progressed these past few years.
And yes, a little respect when visiting a place and fitting in as best possible is a good idea… basic manners and paying your bills is a start!
