AskLeo - Why Hasn't Hive Gone Mainstream Yet?

in LeoFinance3 years ago

I am following closely the protests Canadians are engaged in right now when we can finally witness how cowards politicians such as Trudeau are, who's nowhere to find and refused to face the country's people. Covid has both enslaved us more, but at the same time worked as a wake up call, if that's even possible...

For the past two years or so this pandemic has proved us that most of the politicians are not working for the benefit of the people, but rather for their pockets and the pockets of the ones paying them. For some of us this was clear for many years now, but not for the majority.

Mainstream media is not covering this event because mainstream media has long ceased to be a tool of the free people and instead became a manipulation arm for the elites.

There are alternatives for the mainstream media outlets and ways of spreading the truth, Hive being one of them. I was thinking today, while swiping through all sort of tweets regarding the revolution from Canada, why aren't people using Hive more... Or better said: why isn't Hive mainstream yet?

What has started in Canada will follow in many countries imo, Australia being a candidate for that matter because all this situation is nerve consuming and nothing more but a clownery, when you look at the data and how much manipulation we've been served by these politicians.

Lets stick to the topic, though, why isn't Hive mainstream yet? Nobody can get censored in here...

The most basic answer that I found is convenience. The masses have become so lazy and accustomed with what's being served that they're no longer searching for alternatives. Convenience is probably progress' toughest enemy.

There are plenty of crypto people for example who know about Hive, Vitalik Buterin included and still refuse to use it and that's also out of convenience. They seem to be fine with twitter, youtube and the mainstream crap we get for free.

What do you think, why hasn't Hive gone mainstream yet?

Thanks for attention,
Adrian

Hive is not hard. Hive is massively counterintuitive. And those intuition were shaped for centuries of hierarchical societal structures based on violence. It takes time to work against these habits. Builiding truly free system is not pulling just one lever, it's multitude of buttons, levers and switches arranged differently.

Mainly, I would say the learning curve is an issue. There are a lot of things you need to figure out before you can navigate this sphere. A lot of people do not have that patience. I have many newbies come into my community confused and even after carefully explaining things to them, they opt-out.

There are centralized platforms that do a better job when it comes to social experience and that's what we are competing with, sadly.

Aside from earning, the major incentive for using hive has been its high censorship resistance and that has been our selling point for years now but that hasn't done much. So I understand the shift to NFT and gaming, since the hive is a multi-purpose chain, it can grow in other directions that are catchy or more appalling to the masses

Are we ever going mainstream? Honestly, I doubt and maybe that's a good thing. Maybe we are structured in a way where multiple small communities can exist but not as a whole.

Lastly marketing. I don't think we've scored it yet. I appreciate the recent efforts to promote hive. It is welcomed the development but I think sub-communities and tribes should take the cue as well. There is so much duplicity (in function) on hive without real growth.

Still talking to the same people I have been talking to for the last four years.

Ease of use is still an issue. We are still dealing with something too "techy" for most. It is something that needs to be focused upon in this year.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

True, but if you really are in the search for alternatives to the legacy system apps you'll solve the tiny puzzle of using Hive.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

i guess once we get past this hurdle retention rate will increase significantly.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Almost non existent marketing is something Hive is suffering from severely.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

This is impacting the blockchain negatively. it is strange discovering that hive is still very much a
novelty in the crypto space. it might be good for some of us in the short-long but certain we don't want to be a chain with potential ten years from now. that narrative will certainly not fly

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

We don't market, we don't have a clear vision and the community is fairly unpleasant with expecting people to come here and understand and know the hidden rules.

Also it isn't easy to understand the keys, the community, how to handle pictures and a secret set of rules. It needs to be easier.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I am afraid that won't be changed any time soon.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I tend to agree! But some of the 2nd layer solutions are maturing. We shall see if any other them can gain enough autonomy to have a strong enough culture to overcome some of the issues.

I feel like Leo is trying.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Perhaps people is still lazy to understand how a blockchain works... all these concepts about Hive power, HBD, Liquid Hive are a hurdle for many

That can take some time, but searching for alternatives for the legacy system is another story.

It is not so much lazy as the fact that many are still not technical in nature. This is especially true of the older generations. That is why they have such a small adoption rates.

agree

We need easy on-boarding. I have invited many friends here who are not active after a month. The account management is critically complex for the general mass, I agree.

We are not fancy enough. I think that is the main reason in addition to being raw and complex. I have seen other projects mentioned in crypto twitter without any audience and users. They don't even have a product. It is gut-wrenching to see people sold on promises and not see a product that is actually working. We need more fancy front ends. I wish Project Blank was here earlier.

Oh man, you switched the knife in that open wound here... Project blank. If I were Khal I would have prioritized that over everything. I doubt any product they had so far is going to rival it.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Me too. I wish they prioritize the app that has the possibility to solve the on-boarding issue and promote short form content on Hive. I may be short-sighted but I value community products to financial products. Not saying we don't need defi products but ...

same here

I wish Project Blank was here earlier.

You arent alone on that one. We are all anxious for it since it will have a low learning curve. People will know how to use it immediately.

That is one of the applications that could onboard a ton of users.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Could not agree more. Imagine the joy of sharing a video of the soccer goal Canada scored earlier in the afternoon without having to worry about the backlash from the Hive community :P

well, I guess it depends on your definition of mainstream and what you consider HIVE. If you look at Splinterlands I'd have to say that it has gone Mainstream when it comes to Blockchain Gaming. Then there's Ragnarok launching later this year. What about when Project Blank comes out or when the airdrops hit for 3Speak ? Maybe as a blogging Platform it won't go mainstream but there's many ways to "HIVE". I think we will get to the point where people won't even know they are on the Blockchain and all the "hard" stuff happens in the background.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I'm pointing at Hive as a platform to be used to fight censorship and as an alternative to legacy media outlets.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Network effect.
Twitter and YouTube is where the people are.

nobody wants a blog site unless they need a presence on medium.

in short we need people to make new innovative apps that use hive as a backbone. the hive account would not be something most people use knowingly. apps just allocate hp to users which creates constant increase in buy pressure in the event of a viral app.

Blogging is such a small percentage of the internet traffic it is a mistake to focus upon that. Most are not going to put together 700-1000 word posts.

That is why we need ProjectBlank very quick. That will radically change Hive completely.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

You are damn right on this one.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It is going to take a while. That said, the growth rate over the past 2 years is incredible. Cryptocurrency is growing at a sensational rate. We did roughly a 3X during 2021, that is huge.

If we could double in 2022, this will put us over 600 million users.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Quite promising.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I don't think there are that many people who really want to blog. In a way, I think there are way too many consumers and I was one of them who didn't really comment much either. So I think we need more mainstream applications that onboard people just based on it's uses. So maybe a Project Blank or some other project will help.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Wow, so many are calling for project blank... it has to be a hit.

Posted using LeoFinance Mobile

I'm starting to feel like everyone has an agenda against Hive and community-driven projects. Even Coin Gecko recently put out an infographic showing Steemit as the pilar of web 3.0 and Hive was nowhere to be found.

Screenshot_3.png

I guess none of them can make a quick buck from mentioning or promoting Hive so they all stick to their VC-backed chains and projects... It's sad but with every passing day, I am more convinced that they are all ignoring it on purpose.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

That's sad...

I think hive is still underated out there in Cryptocurrency world.

true

For me, when I came to Hive, I didn't use Facebook nor Instagram that much. I used them to post in Facebook Marketplace and keeping me updated with local busineses making their updates thru Facebook.
Facebook, Instagram and Twitter they all seem complicated to me up to the point that I don't use them for my personal posts.
So when I got into Hive thru Splinterlands, I was even more baffled at how PeakD or Hive Engine worked. The terms like resource credits, upvote mana, HP, HBD, and all these acronym terms made the learning curve even steeper.

It was thanks to a couple of intro posts and videos that I spent my time to sit and watch is when I started to understand the mere basics of it.
But for the newcomer coming from Facebook, being a Hiver is going to be an uphill climb with rocks tied to their feet.

The thing that makes it easy for a Hive adopter versus other crypto ecosystems is that Hive uses a human friendly username as the public address. This eases out a lot of mistakes and misunderstandings as well as complexity layers when it comes to dealing with wallet mechanics, but even with that, crypto for the masses is still in its beta stage. There are way too many hurdles and dumb proofing to be made in crypto's architecture before it starts to be adopted by the masses, maybe Hive is going to be the breakthrough, or maybe Solana or perhaps Avax, no one knows.
There are many manholes uncovered in the crypto design that perhaps it is never going to take off due to the complexity of its design as well as the ever lurking danger of one single implementation vulnerability that makes the thief hiding in the manhole getting away with all the stored value in it.

But in the meantime, while I wait for the world wide adoption of cryptos, Hive is a good classroom and practice lab where I can teach my family how to deal with cryptos in an understandable way with practice infrastructure already built as Dapps, without the complexities of strings and strings of public keys where one single mistake in a character ends up with your funds sent into an irretrievable black hole address. Or the fear of opening your Metamask wallet in a phishing website promising you airdrops and the next second your wallet is emptied because they were able to read all your private keys the moment you opened your Metamask wallet.

I think some of the reason is FEAR...whether it be from other crypto groups or web2 platforms like fb or twitter. Being that HIVE has already "cracked the code" for blockchain social media (as far as making it sustainable), its hard for people who want a piece of that pie to give credit where its due. I think theyre all maybe busy trying to come up with a competitor that they can suck some value out of smh

One of those reason I will talk about is not everybody can blog seriously, this is main reason why I believe project blank will be a success. If you are trying to seduce people to hive immediately you mention creating content, sometimes it is a turn.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I agree

Posted using LeoFinance Mobile

why isn't Hive mainstream yet?

For the particular topic of the post I have only two words to say: Project Blank!

Can't wait for that one.

Posted using LeoFinance Mobile

Well, it is because of the same control of the elites that Hive does not resurface on a massive scale.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Mainstream media continues to confidently publish their "view", so as to validate it in a confident and continuous fashion. However, so many are not listening... they are in essence making noise for their own ears to enjoy... global protests reveal what is really going on. the fact that these protests are never really given attention is evidence to anyone with half a brain that they are pushing a narrative... and have zero interest in accurate journalism.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I hope it does. It's exactly what the world is looking for right now. Everyone claims they want an alternative to the awful traditional social media.

There's a lot of negative media hype around crypto, which is keeping some people back (I've talked to people who actually believe ALL crypto has exorbitant fees).

There's also just inertia. People don't want to learn a new system so they stick with the old.

It will take a critical amount of people switching to get people over here, but once we hit that amount, the network effect should take hold and we'll skyrocket.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Because its an absolute nightmare for newcomers.

It's not an issue of the blockchain being a difficult concept.

It's that none of the tribes really explain what they are and appear like totally different platforms. Plus a lot of very basic features like adding profile and cover photos simply don't work.

If you were to strip away anything to do with the Hive engine, and have the network just being posting and comments, account creation is still that difficult you'd struggle to get people to stay.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

The value of any network is in the number of people in that network. It took social media quite a while to establish itself in the minds of its users. Hive is undergoing the same process. Overnight success usually takes a quite a long time. Once the tipping point has been reached though, the network effect will take over and success happens over night.
