I hope you are all well. Today I want to talk to you about a film I saw recently. It kept popping up on TikTok and a friend mentioned it to me, so when I had some free time from university, I decided to watch it. The film is called Exhumation.
Exhumation is a Korean horror film that, as it progresses, leans towards a dark fantasy that blends Korean folklore and history. The film follows renowned shaman Kim Go-Eun and her partner and apprentice Le Do-Hyun, who are hired by a wealthy Korean-American family to investigate a mysterious illness that is killing their eldest son and for which doctors cannot explain.
Kim Go-Eun soon realises that she will need more help if she wants to save the baby and his family, so she contacts embalmer Yoo Hae-jin and Korea's most famous feng shui master, Choi Min-Sik. Because what is afflicting the family and the baby is a call from the grave.
It turns out that in this family, most of the firstborn sons have horrible fates, and the baby in danger is the third after the deaths of the previous ones. The firstborn's illness is a claim from the afterlife, as in Korea it is believed that the spirits of ancestors influence the lives of their descendants. The protagonists soon discover that everything seems to be due to a poorly located grave (in Korea, it is believed that a poorly located grave brings misfortune to descendants), so they search for the grave.
But when they find it, geomancer Choi Min-Sik is reluctant to continue with the work, saying that there is something wrong with the grave, how it was buried and the spirit of the person who was buried there. Even so, they dig up the grave without imagining the evil that would be unleashed. Not only because of the grave, but because of what they would discover after digging it up, as the grave was not the only thing buried there and some things are buried so that they can never come out.
This film is divided into two acts; the first chapters make up act one, which consists of the initial investigation by the protagonists, while the second is the climax, the discovery of the truth and the confrontation with what they have unleashed.
This film delves into Korean folklore and spiritual practices, feng shui, and how the way a person was buried says a lot about them. The film intertwines the history of Korea since the Joseon Dynasty, but also the underlying conflicts and invasions with Japan. The film shows in detail the gut, which are rituals or ceremonies that shamans perform to appease the spirits, among other rituals, which are visually stunning. Something I really liked is that they explain "generational curses", which are unresolved past issues and inherited guilt, as well as yin and yang, spirits and energies; it's like a lesson in Korean folklore and culture.
It is a somewhat dense film, as it goes beyond being "terrifying", which it is not so much, but rather leans more towards dark fantasy, as I said at the beginning, and when mixed with Korean cultural folklore, for me it makes for an enriching experience, although the story may be confusing for Western audiences or those with no knowledge of Korean history. In other words, the film requires a certain amount of knowledge; even so, I think the film provides enough detail for one to follow the plot.
I particularly liked it a lot; I don't consider it to be a very scary film, although it does have scenes that may affect a sensitive audience. But I found it particularly entertaining from an intellectual point of view, and the performances were very good, as were the scenes and the atmosphere of the film.

Espero que se encuentren bien. Hoy les quiero hablar de una película que vi hace poco. Esta me salía mucho en TikTok y una amiga justo me habló de ella, así que cuando tuve un momento libre de la universidad me puse a verla. Esta película se llama: Exhuma.
Exhuma es una película coreana de terror que, a medida que avanza, se inclina hacia una fantasía oscura que mezcla el folclore y la historia coreana. La película sigue a la renombrada chamana Kim Go-Eun y su compañero y aprendiz Le Do-Hyun, que son contratados por una adinerada familia coreano-americana para investigar una misteriosa enfermedad que esta matando a su hijo primogénito y de la cual los médicos no encuentran explicación.
Kim Go-Eun pronto se da cuenta de que necesitará más ayuda si quiere salvar al bebé y a su familia, por lo que contacta con el embalsamador Yoo Hae-jin y el maestro de feng shui más famoso de Corea, Choi Min-Sik. Porque lo que está aquejando a la familia y al bebé es un llamado de la tumba.
Resulta que en esa familia la mayoría de los hijos primogénitos tienen horribles destinos y el bebé que corre peligro es el tercero después de la muerte de los anteriores. La enfermedad del primogénito es un reclamo del más allá, pues en Corea se cree que los espíritus de los ancestros influyen en la vida de sus descendientes. Los protagonistas pronto descubren que todo parece ser por una tumba mal ubicada (en Corea se cree que una tumba mal ubicada trae desgracia a los descendientes), por lo que buscan la tumba.
Pero cuando la encuentran, el geomante Choi Min-Sik se encuentra reticente a continuar con el trabajo, pues dice que hay algo mal con la tumba, en cómo fue enterrada y en el espíritu de la persona que fue enterrada; aun así desentierran la tumba sin imaginar el mal que se desataría. No solo por la tumba, sino por lo que descubrirían después de desenterrarla, pues la tumba no era lo único enterrado ahí y algunas cosas son enterradas para que nunca puedan salir.
Esta película ocurre por capítulos separados en dos actos; los primeros capítulos conforman el acto uno, que se compone de la investigación inicial que hacen los protagonistas, mientras que el segundo es el clímax, el descubrimiento de la verdad y el enfrentamiento contra lo que han desatado.
Esta película se adentra en el folclore coreano y las prácticas espirituales de esta, el feng shui y cómo la forma en que fue enterrada una persona dice mucho de ella. La película entrelaza la historia de Corea desde la época de la dinastía Joseon, pero también los enfrentamientos e invasiones subyacentes que tuvieron con Japón. La película muestra en detalle los gut, que son rituales o ceremonias que los chamanes hacen para apaciguar a los espíritus, entre otros rituales, que visualmente son una cosa sorprendente. Algo que me gustó mucho es que explican las “maldiciones generacionales”, que es el pasado no resuelto y la culpa heredada, así como el yin y el yang, los espíritus y las energías; es como una lección de folclore y cultura coreana.
Es una película algo densa, pues va más allá de ser “terrorífica”, que no es tanto, sino que va más en una dirección de fantasía oscura, como dije al inicio, y al mezclarse con el folclore de la cultura coreana, para mí lo hace una experiencia enriquecedora, aunque la historia puede resultar confusa para el público occidental o para quienes tengan nulo conocimiento de la historia coreana. Es decir, la película exige cierto conocimiento; aun así, creo que la película detalla lo suficiente para que uno pueda seguirle el hilo.
Particularmente me gustó mucho; no considero que sea una película que dé mucho miedo, aunque tiene escenas que pueden afectar a un público sensible. Pero particularmente me pareció más entretenida desde el punto de vista intelectual y las actuaciones fueron muy buenas, así como las escenas y la atmósfera de la película.

Uy esta se ve como el tipo de películas que me gusta y ahora que los coreanos son parte de mi vida más jajaja. Me encanta el tema de las tradiciones culturales y ese es un país que tiene muchísimas creencias que para ellos son sagradas.
