The law is supposed to be a base for order in the society. Yes the law is not always perfect but I'm not going to talk about that today. The reality is that any action that goes against the law is a crime and the offenders are regarded as criminals. I'm not a legal expert so I don't know for sure how the law works but I do know that criminals get punished by the degree of the offense they committed. A petty thief would not be given the same punishment as a fraudster. A drug dealer would not be sentenced so harshly as a serial killer.
There are crimes that can be understood and forgiven. There are also crimes that are really bad but not enough to hate the perpetrator forever. On the contrary, there are crimes that are so evil that you would want to believe that hell really exists just for the perpetrators.
The miniseries, Black Bird, shows a sort of comparison in crime and the minds of criminals. It is a true life story of the American serial killer, Larry Hall, based on the book "In With The Devil" by James Keene. Without wasting anymore time, let's get into it...
About Black Bird/Sobre Black Bird
James "Jimmy" Keene is a drug and arms dealer living the life in Chicago, Illinois. During a raid, he is arrested, charged and eventually sentenced to 10 years in prison. A few months into his sentence, Jimmy is recruited by the FBI to help with a case. This is no easy case though because Jimmy is asked to go undercover in a maximum security facility to get a confession from suspected serial killer, Larry Hall. If the operation is successful, Jimmy would have his sentence commuted and he would walk free. Initially, Jimmy is reluctant but he eventually agrees and is checked into hell.
The operation begins. With a lot to lose on the outside, Jimmy begins to adapt to the new facility. Eventually, he meets Larry and the real challenge begins.
Will Jimmy get Larry to confess? Will justice prevail? Will Jimmy survive the hell he got thrown in?

My Opinion on Black Bird/Mi opinión sobre Black Bird
I watched this show a few weeks back after I saw someone make a review of it in this community. Due to the emotional and psychological impact of the entire story, I had to take sometime to decide whether to write a review or not. Thing is, I've loved true crime stories, especially the ones involving serial killers, since I was about 7 years old. I've watched hundreds of shows and documentaries, read many articles and listened to tons of podcasts on the subject. Sometimes all that negative content can take a toll on a sane person's mental health.
Well, serial killers are not sane people which is why they can commit heinous crimes that are just unfathomable to the average person. There is something broken in these people that makes them go against the greatest morals of humanity. Because they don't feel the way other humans do, they are regarded as monsters and are hated by society. In reality, monsters can come in different sizes and shapes. They can be big and scary but can also be dorky and weird like Larry Hall.
As weird as it is for me to admit it, the best character in this series in my opinion is Larry Hall. The actor, Paul Hauser, did a fantastic job with this character. His words and expressions were nothing short of a really disturbed person. I wouldn't know what a first hand interaction with a psychopath would be like but Paul played it in a way I would imagine it. The way he acted and the things he said were just really disgusting. The emotionless and calm demeanor made it clear that Larry Hall was not normal. Paul Hauser wore the skin of this character so well that you may just end up really hating him. I had to even watch an interview of the actor to remind myself that he was a regular guy with a wife and a kid. It's this type of memorable performance that I like to see in a show.
I cannot mention Paul Hauser without mentioning his co-star Taron Egerton. There's something about this Kingsman star that just makes him very likeable. He plays the character of James Keene or Jimmy. I really love the conflict and change that this character had to go through. In the beginning he was really smug and a little corny but as he got to spend time with hardened and insane criminals, his personality gradually broke down. Can you imagine it? Getting sent to a mental facility to get a confession while acting like you enjoy the serial killer's sick stories and descriptions? Just like anyone, it took a huge toll on Jimmy that sometimes he'd go back to his cell shaking and crying.
A very disturbing moment for me was when Jimmy tried to get Larry to feel some remorse and let the victims' families know where to find them but Larry would not budge. It was sad seeing Jimmy try to understand why Larry would not do the right thing. The smug drug dealer who loved dark humor began to understand that there were levels to evil and he was way below Larry. Jimmy was so clearly affected that drastic change in his initial personality was even highlighted in court.
Taron Egerton's performance was priceless in this show. The charm that he expressed was top notch. Also, the way he expressed his emotions was so damn convincing. If you're a fan of Egerton, then you really should see this show. You're just gonna love him.
Still talking about the cast, I would also like to point out the performance of Greg Kinnear as Detective Brian Miller. Greg's performance together with the director's work made Detective Brian a brilliant character. I have watched many detective movies and shows where the detectives would wear cool shades and act all emotionless until it gets to a scene of pure rage. This one was different. When the first victim was discovered you could see and feel the impact such a sight had on the detective. Right there and then he got attached to the victim and made it a responsibility to bring her justice. The whole thing is similar to what I hear detectives on podcasts and documentaries describe the effect their work has on them. It makes Detective Brian Miller a really natural character.
Earlier, I mentioned that this miniseries is based on a book by James Keene himself. I have not read the book so I can't say if it is a good adaptation or not. What I do know though is that the show is amazing. For one, I really love the way the story was told. The events were not really presented chronologically. There was a constant switch between the present and the past and you wouldn't even know what year it was or how much time that had passed unless it was mentioned. You'd think that this would mess the story up but it was actually presented very beautifully. Some really top directing work went into this show to make it turn out like it did.
Because the story of this miniseries is based on true events, it doesn't have the resolution that you'd hope for. The way things ended was kind of disappointing but that isn't something to complain about. The story is still very beautiful and sad. There are scenes that will really get to you and either make you very angry or sad. The genuine character chemistry, the color and the film scores all give the series an unforgetable feel.

I'm a good fan of Crime films....I loved the way you reviewed the movie in a very detailed form. you really did a great job with the way you analysed the mind of the criminal mastermind. I always try to figure out how the minds of criminals work when committing heinous crimes. I really can't wait to watch this 'Black Bird' because it seems like it is going to be a very interesting miniseries.
Awww thank you for the compliment on my work :). I also try to understand how criminals (especially serial killers) think. I've watched a lot of documentaries where psychology experts try to explain this but I still never really understand.
Wow you like true crime. Ok then, you should watch Black Bird. Just prepare for a very disturbing experience.
Thanks for reading my post and for taking time to comment. I appreciate it!
Yes the series is a very interesting one. The fact that it is based on true events makes the series much more captivating. The idea of the legal system hiring criminals to do very dangerous work in exchange for leniency is something that we see a lot in movies but this series proves that it really happens.
There are definitely levels to criminality but I agree that no sane person can just become a heartless serial killer. It takes a special type of monster to commit such acts and still be able to live with themselves. Black Bird does well to show us a bit about a serial killer. It's difficult for us regular people to understand why they do terrible things and so the natural thing is to hate and be scared of them.
Thank you so much for reading my post and for the comment. Have a great week ahead!

Check out the last post from @hivebuzz:
Paul Hauser gives a great performance, the first time I saw him was in a series about mixed martial arts, he played a character a bit unhinged as well. He also starred in a movie directed by Clint Eastwood, about a real event as well. Greg Kinnear is fantastic as the detective, his every gesture and look conveys the feelings of his character. I liked the scene where Jimmy breaks down, locked in his cell, crying silently, after hearing Larry tell what he did with one of the victims. A heartbreaking scene.
I totally agree that Paul Hauser was a great fit for the Larry character. He presented that character in a very repulsive and unlikeable way which is a good thing. The first time I saw this guy perform was in Cruella but he didn't even stand out to me. Seeing his awesome performance in Black Bird was very pleasant.
Greg Kinnear is an actor that I did not know until I saw this show. From the moment he got a look at the victim, I knew he would make a great detective and he did. In fact, every member of the cast was just superb.
Yes the scene where Jimmy breaks down after hearing Larry's recount was very sad to watch. It just showed how he could not handle it. When he finally lost his cool it was not surprising at all.
Thank you for stopping by and for the comment :)
True crime stories have always been very captivating. The mystery behind these types of stories just makes you want to sit and not miss a minute. It's weird but people (including myself) have this fascination with true crime especially the ones that involve murder and serial killers. Nowadays we get to consume these types of content in many digital forms including a show like this. It's difficult to explain the feeling but I totally understand your view. If you really like true crime then Black Bird is a miniseries that you definitely want to see.
Thanks fore reading my work and the comment!
