The story of Nawai, a woman of Lebanese origin who arrived in Canada with a new identity after fleeing and surviving her country's civil war, Nawai begins a new life with her twin sons. Shortly before her death she lost the ability to communicate, becoming mute until her death, leaving in her will 2 missions for her children that they cannot understand, one of them was to look for their father who they thought was dead and the other to find their brother who they did not know of his existence.

It is a story based on the play Incendies from the tetralogy The Blood of Promises by Wajdi Mouawad, which I will review with the spoilers removed so that you can enjoy it in its entirety.

Plot

Nawai is a young woman who fell in love with a foreign man and became pregnant, this behavior is reprehensible and cruelly punished in her culture that sees it as a dishonor to the family, to avoid the shame her brothers decide to collect the life of her boyfriend, and she finds herself in danger, but is saved thanks to the intersection of her mother. The beginning of this film reminded me of a case that happened in my country, Venezuela, many years ago, where a father from the same culture murdered his daughter for a similar event.

Returning to the film, Nawai, immersed in sadness, gives birth to her son who is taken from her arms from the moment of his birth and given to an orphanage, but before that she saw him for the last time and noticed that he had a curious mole on the heel of one of his feet, a mark that would help her to recognize him in the future, as she was young she still had a chance to rebuild her life, so her mother decided to send her to study at a distant uncle's house in the city.

Nawai became an excellent student, joining the student newspaper and speaking out against injustice, but at that time civil war broke out, dividing the nation between Catholics and Muslims, opening the way for an exodus. As she had promised to find her son, she returned to her home village, but it was destroyed by bombs and massacres and by the time she reached the orphanage it was too late because all the children had been taken away.

From there this woman began an odyssey to survive and find her firstborn son, she followed the trail for several days and had to camouflage herself between beliefs and pass herself off as a Muslim and other times as a Catholic, in this period she was filled with rage against the system and the leaders who started this war by becoming a spy, Later she assassinated one of the most important leaders and was condemned to the worst women's prison where she was tortured for many years, but they never managed to break her, during this time she became stronger and after being tortured and raped she decided to sing, that's why the film is called the woman who sang.

This woman managed to survive and start again in another country, taking with her her her last children, twins, but the torment of finding her firstborn son was present until the day she had a traumatic encounter, and it was the beginning of the end leaving her speechless, nobody knew Nawai, her story was revealed long after her death when her children decided to fulfil her last wish and discover what was in the missions that their mother left them.

Nawai es una joven que se enamoró de un hombre extranjero y quedó embarazada, esta conducta es reprochable y cruelmente castigada en su cultura que lo ven como una deshonra a la familia, para evitar la vergüenza sus hermanos deciden cobrar la vida de su novio y ella se encuentra en peligro, pero se salva gracias la intersección de su madre. El inicio de esta película me hizo recordar un caso que sucedió en mi país, Venezuela hace muchos años, donde un padre de la misma cultura asesinó a su hija por un acontecimiento similar.

Volviendo a la película, Nawau sumida en la tristeza da luz a su hijo que le es arrebatado de sus brazos desde el momento de su nacimiento y entregado a un orfanato, pero antes lo vio por última vez y observó que tenía un curioso lunar en el talón de uno de sus pies, marca que le ayudaría a reconocerlo en el futuro, cómo era joven todavía tenía una oportunidad de rehacer su vida por lo que su madre decidió enviarla a estudiar en casa de un tío lejano en la ciudad.

Nawai se convirtió en una excelente estudiante formando parte del periódico estudiantil y desde allí alzó la voz en contra de las injusticias, pero en ese tiempo estalló la guerra civil dividiendo la nación entre los católicos y los musulmanes, abriéndose paso al éxodo. Cómo ella había prometido encontrar a su hijo, regresó a su pueblo natal, pero estaba destruido por las bombas y las masacres y cuando llegó al orfanato ya era tarde porque se habían llevado todos los niños.

Desde ahí esta mujer comenzó una odisea para sobrevivir y encontrar a su hijo primogénito, siguió el rastro por varios días y tuvo que camuflarse entre creencias y hacerse pasar por musulmana y otras veces por católica, en este periodo se llenó de rabia contra el sistema y los líderes que iniciaron esta guerra convirtiéndose en espía, para luego asesinar a uno de los líderes más importantes siendo condenada a la peor cárcel de mujeres en la que fue torturada por muchos años, pero nunca la llegaron a doblegar, este tiempo ella se fortaleció y después de ser torturada y violada ella decidía cantar, por eso la película se llama así la mujer que cantaba.

Esta mujer logró sobrevivir y comenzar de nuevo en otro país, llevando consigo sus últimos hijos unos gemelos, pero el tormento de encontrar a su hijo primogénito estuvo presente hasta el día que tuvo un encuentro traumático y fue el comienzo del fin dejándola sin palabras, nadie conocía a Nawai su historia fue revelada mucho después de su muerte cuándo sus hijos decidieron cumplir con su último deseo y descubrir lo había en las misiones que su madre les dejó.

For a film based on a play, I think it has a lot of bits and pieces that could be real, which makes it an impressive film that you can't forget.

This movie was so interesting that it kept me entertained from beginning to end because there was a lot of suspense, even though it was not its genre. There is also drama, history and a bit of gore.

There were scenes so shocking that they took my breath away and I had to pause to reflect, breathe and think about all the terrible things that happen in war, in the name of God and religion, and the atmosphere was so diverse that I felt I was in the territory of the war and the story itself.

And if the ending is unexpected and shocking, I think it is full of positive messages of reconciliation and peace. After seeing this film, I wanted to see this play one day, I was very satisfied and I recommend it to you. It will pull at some heartstrings.

Para hacer una película basada en una obra de teatro, considero que tiene muchos fragmentos que pueden ser reales, lo que hace que sea una película impresionante de esas que no se pueden olvidar.

Esta película fue tan interesante que me mantuvo de principio a fin entretenida porque había mucho suspenso, aunque no era su género. También hay drama, historia y un poco de gore.

Hubo escenas tan impactantes que me dejaron sin aliento y tuve que dar pausa para poder reflexionar, respirar y pensar en todas las cosas tan terribles que pasan en la guerra, en nombre de Dios y de la religión, además contó con un ambiente tan diverso que me sentí metida en el territorio de la guerra y de la misma historia.

Y si el final es inesperado e impactante, creo que está lleno de mensajes positivos de reconciliación y paz. Después de ver esta película me quedé con ganas de encontrarme algún día con esta obra de teatro, quedé muy satisfecha y se la recomiendo. Moverá algunas fibras de su interior.
