Has it ever happened to you that a movie has marked your life forever? That happened to me with Rebel Without a Cause.
I know what I'm talking about, a movie that very few people today will know, although at the time it completely changed the way certain topics were treated in Hollywood, it is really a story that takes place in very few hours (24 if I remember correctly).
Released in 1955, it was directed by Nicholas Ray and starred James Dean, a very young Natalie Wood and a charming Sal Mineo.

¿En su vida les ha ocurrido que alguna película les ha marcado su vida para siempre? Eso me ocurrió con Rebelde sin Causa.
Se de lo que les estoy hablando, de una película que muy pocos hoy en día conocerán, aunque en su momento dio un vuelco total a como se trataban ciertos temas en Hollywood, en verdad es una historia que transcurre en muy pocas horas (24 si mal no recuerdo).
Estrenada en 1955 fue dirigida por Nicholas Ray y protagonizada por James Dean, una jovencísima Natalie Wood y un encantador Sal Mineo.

Let's go back to the time of the 50's, only ten years ago one of the most bloody wars that existed in the world had ended: the Second World War. People live in a world that is trying to heal its wounds, but there are conflicts that could not be expected: a youth who had no idea what was going to happen to their lives, everything bothers them, nothing satisfies them and then the quarrelsome boy is born who wants, with one blow, to end everything established.
This film is full of insinuations, things you would not expect to see in that time full of taboos, where naming homosexuality or implying that a man could also take care of things like washing, cooking, sweeping or cleaning the windows was frowned upon.

Remontémonos a la época de los años 50, hacía solo diez años había terminado una de las guerras más cruentas que existieron en el mundo: la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Las personas viven en un mundo que trata de sanar sus heridas, pero existen conflictos que no se podían esperar: una juventud que no tenía idea de que iba a ser de su vida, todo les molesta nada les satisface y nace entonces el chico pendenciero que quiere, de un manotazo, acabar con todo lo establecido.
Esta película está llena de insinuaciones, cosas que no esperas ver en esa época llena de tabúes, donde nombrar la homosexualidad o dar a entender que un hombre también podía encargarse de las cosas de la cosa como lavar, cocinar, barrer o limpiar los vidrios de las ventanas estaba muy mal visto.<

In Rebel Without a Cause he deals in a very subtle way: on the one hand, a world full of complexities and on the other hand, he creates scenes that are all like a ballet to make us understand that all of this really exists.

En Rebelde sin Causa trata de una manera muy sutil: por un lado un mundo lleno de complejidades y por el otro realiza escenas que son todas como un ballet para darnos a entender que en verdad todo esto existe.<

The characters of this mythical movie are:
James Dean in his role as Jim Stark, a quarrelsome teenager who exhales his hormones everywhere and feels misunderstood and is dissatisfied with the world around him. He is also frustrated by his parents' constant fights that never come to fruition.
Natalie Wood as Judy, a girl who has run away from home and feels that her parents don't understand her. She feels that her father no longer loves her and she dresses provocatively and hangs out with the wrong people.
Sal Mineo as Plato, a boy who has no family roots since his father abandons them and his mother leaves him with the housekeeper because she has to go to work, and that is how he ends up being arrested for murdering some puppies and there, in jail, he meets the two characters who will guide his life for 24 hours.
Frank Stark played by Jim Backus in his role as a father subjected to the will of an energetic woman who is unable to give an answer to his son.
Rebel Without a Cause was directed by Nicholas Ray (directed Johnny Guitar 1954), with music by Leonard Rosenman, a Warner Brothers film. It was nominated for three Oscars, but the Academy didn't like depictions of that type at the time: scruffy people who made the hard and bloody life seem ideal. And the nominations went to the supporting characters of Plato played by Sal Mineo and that of Judy as a new female promise to Natalie Wood. As well as for the screenplay written by Nicholas Ray and Stewart Stern.

Los personajes de esta mítica película son:
James Dean en su papel de Jim Stark, un adolescente pendenciero que exhala sus hormonas por todas partes y se siente incomprendido y está inconforme con el mundo que lo rodea. También se siente frustrado por las constantes peleas de sus padres que nunca llegan a buen puerto.
Natalie Wood como Judy, una chica que ha huido de su hogar y que siente que sus padres no la comprenden. Que siente que su padre ya no la quiere y se viste provocativamente y anda con las personas menos indicadas.
Sal Mineo como Platón, un niño que no tiene raíces familiares puesto que su padre los abandona y su madre lo deja con el ama de llaves porque debe ir a trabajar, y es así como acaba siendo detenido por asesinar unos cachorros y allí, en la cárcel, conoce a los dos personajes que guiarán su vida durante 24 horas.
Frank Stark interpretado por Jim Backus en su papel de padre sometido a la voluntad de una mujer enérgica y que no es capaz de dar una respuesta a su hijo.

Rebelde sin Causa fue dirigida por Nicholas Ray (dirigió Johnny Guitar 1954), con música de Leonard Rosenman, una película de la Warner Brothers. Fue nominada a tres óscares, pero a la Academia no le gustaba en esa época representaciones de ese tipo: personas desaliñadas que hacían que la vida dura y cruenta pareciese ideal. Y las nominaciones fueron para los personajes secundarios de Platón interpretado por Sal Mineo y el de Judy como nueva promesa femenina a Natalie Wood. Así como para el guion escrito por Nicholas Ray y Stewart Stern.

I reiterate that this film narrated how the generation gap of the time was a deep precipice. How many taboos were being broken, how the world of cinema was evolving.

Reitero que esta película narró como la brecha generacional de la época era un profundo precipicio. Como se estaban resquebrajando muchos tabúes, como el mundo del cine estaba evolucionando.

I saw it when this film was almost 20 years old, so imagine my surprise to learn that the protagonist had died in a car accident a month before its release and that, at the time of his tragic death, he was a youth icon for his portrayal in two previous films, East of Eden and Giant. But his life and work is for another review.
If you want to observe what life was like for young people sixty-five years ago you should take a walk through this film, its music is exquisite and the staging looks like a cadenced dance, especially the Planetarium scene.

La vi cuando ya esta película tenía en el mercado casi 20 años, imagínense cual fue mi sorpresa al saber que el protagonista había muerto en un accidente automovilístico un mes antes de su estreno y que, en el momento de su trágico deceso, era un icono juvenil por su representación en dos películas anteriores Al este del Edén y Gigante. Pero su vida y obra es para otra reseña.
Si quieres observar cómo era la vida de los jóvenes hace sesenta y cinco años debes darte un paseo por esta película, su música es exquisita y la puesta en escena parece un baile cadencioso, sobre todo la escena del Planetario.
