And since Halloween is just around the corner, let's continue with the theme and what better way than to remind you of this work of art. It has my favorite things in cinema and together: a fantasy animation with gothic horror, Tim Burton, Jhonny Deep and Helena Bonham Carter. Corpse Bride is about a Russian story where we will see points of romance, loneliness, comedy and a bit of tragedy. This would be Jhonny's first time doing voice acting and, needless to say, everything he does is perfection, so this would be no exception.
Y como ya falta poco para el tan famoso Halloween, continuemos con la temática y qué mejor forma que recordarles esta obra de arte. Tiene mis cosas favoritas del cine y ¡juntas!: una animación de fantasía con horror gótico, Tim Burton, Jhonny Deep y Helena Bonham Carter. El Cadáver de la Novia se trata de una historia rusa donde veremos puntos románticos, de soledad, comedia y un poco de tragedia. Esta sería la primera vez que Jhonny hace actuación de voz y, está demás decirlo, pero todo lo hace es perfección, así que esta no sería la excepción.
Argument.
A young pianist is about to marry a beautiful young woman, but by accident ends up getting engaged to the corpse of a bride, triggering an internal struggle between what he really wants and fulfilling his promise with a beautiful pile of bones and disintegrated flesh. What would we be willing to do for love?
Argumento.
Un joven pianista está a punto de contraer nupcias con una hermosa joven, pero por accidente termina comprometiéndose con el cadáver de una novia, desencadenando una lucha interna entre lo que él realmente desea y el cumplir su promesa con un hermoso cúmulo de huesos y carne desintegrada. ¿Qué estaríamos dispuestos a hacer por amor?
Sacrifice.
Love is the most powerful force in the world, even if there are those who insist on proving otherwise. Victor, despite being in love with Victoria, finds himself pressured by both families to become a good husband and comply with the social norms that dictated at the time. While we also see Emily's counterpart showing that love overcomes any barrier and time limit. We could say that both Victor and Emily succumb to pressure, innocence and even tenderness and genuine love to fulfill their dreams.
Sacrificio.
El amor es la fuerza más potente del mundo, aunque haya quienes se empeñan por demostrar lo contrario. Víctor, a pesar de estar enamorado de Victoria, se encuentra presionado por ambas familias para convertirse en un buen esposo y cumplir las normas sociales que dictaban en la época. Mientras también vemos la contraparte de Emily demostrando que el amor sobrepasa cualquier barrera y límite de tiempo. Podíamos decir que ambos, Víctor y Emily, sucumben ante la presión, la inocencia e, incluso, la ternura y el amor genuino para cumplir sus sueños.
Death and life.
We have always been told that death is the absolute end of every living being, however, in the world of the dead, we can see a totally different dynamic. Some continue their routine as it was in life, others adapt little by little, others feel happier being dead, some still regret not having lived what they wanted or how they wished, in short... death continues, in a certain way, as life.
Muerte y vida.
Siempre nos han dicho que la muerte es el final absoluto de todo ser vivo, en cambio, en el mundo de los muertos, podemos ver una dinámica totalmente distinta. Algunos continúan su rutina como en era en vida, otros se adaptan de a poco, otros se sienten más felices estando muertos, algunos aun reniegan de no haber vivido lo que querían o cómo deseaban, en fin… la muerte continua, de cierto modo, como la vida.
Who do they want to be?
No one is saved from the expectations imposed by others. Here we also see it reflected with Victor, who seeks to reaffirm who he is; and Emily, who seeks as best she can to achieve her goal until she manages to open her eyes. Emily's development is so perfectly sweet and hard, that it causes me immense nostalgia and tenderness.
¿Quiénes quieren ser?
Nadie se salva de las expectativas impuestas por los demás. Aquí también lo vemos reflejado con Víctor, quien busca reafirmar quien es; y a Emily, que busca a como de lugar lograr su objetivo hasta que logra abrir los ojos. El desarrollo de Emily es tan perfectamente dulce y duro, que me causa inmensa nostalgia y ternura.
Throughout the story we can find several factors in the characters that make us think about many things. Victor, as I mentioned, represents how social pressure affects him, causing a bit of doubt and a lot of anxiety, unleashing a great internal struggle, but in the end he manages to face his fears. Emily, is the “incarnation” of emotional validation, product of her abandonment and desire to belong to something, she also represents how to deal with grief (which is not only because of the death). Victoria, even though she is not so present in the story, a lot is expected of her, for at that time a woman had to be married from a very young age, otherwise she would be a shame for the family; even though she genuinely wanted to marry Victor, she did not stop feeling pressure from her parents to do her duty. Although I think more than one of us expected that, at some point, Victor would decide for Emily, they are one of the most representative couples in Burton's universe for a reason.
A lo largo de la historia podemos encontrarnos varios factores en los personajes que nos hacen pensar en muchas cosas. Víctor, como les mencioné, representa cómo la presión social afecta, ocasionando un poco de dudas y mucha ansiedad, desatando una gran lucha interna, pero al final logra enfrentar sus miedos. Emily, es la “encarnación” de la validación emocional, producto de su abandono y deseo a pertenecer a algo, también representa cómo afrontar el duelo (que no es solo por la muerte). Victoria, a pesar de no estar tan presente en la historia, no deja de esperarse mucho de ella, para esa época la mujer ya desde muy joven debía estar casada, sino sería una vergüenza para la familia; a pesar de que ella quería casarse genuinamente con Víctor, no dejaba de sentir presión por sus padres ante el deber. Aunque creo que más de uno esperábamos que, en algún punto, Víctor se decidiera por Emily, por algo son una de las parejas más representativas del universo de Burton.
Now, if we focus on the production (I will always say it and stand by it), Burton makes magic, perfection and nothing less than that. The setting and characteristic designs between the dark, the fantastical and the gothic, make his films a beautiful world. In addition, the stop-motion gives the right plus to the narrative. The musicalization is no slouch either, I think I've mentioned it before, I don't like pointless musicals, but here every song touches your soul and makes you go even deeper into the story, you empathize more with the characters.
Ahora, si nos enfocamos en la producción (siempre lo diré y lo mantendré), Burton hace magia, perfección y nada menos que eso. La ambientación y diseños característicos entre lo oscuro, lo fantasioso y lo gótico, hace de sus films un mundo hermoso. Además, el stop-motion da el plus justo para la narrativa. La musicalización tampoco se queda atrás, creo que lo he mencionado antes, no me gustan los musicales sin sentido, pero aquí cada canción te llega al alma y te hace adentrarte aun más en la historia, empatizas más con los personajes.
This story takes us into very deep themes, it is full of symbolism, of course it is also full of many emotions that Burton was in charge of transmitting to us. The mixture of the macabre and beautiful, immerses us to analyze the human and intellectual condition; without leaving aside the emotional, some tears here and there, laughter, moments of helplessness and much reflection. And I think it goes without saying, but if you ask me, I will answer as I always do: “If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have seen it, see it again, you can't lose anything”.
Esta historia nos adentra a temas muy profundos, está llena de simbolismos, por supuesto que también está llena de muchas emociones que Burton se encargó de transmitirnos. La mezcla de lo macabro y hermoso, nos sumerge a analizar la condición humana e intelectual; sin dejar de lado lo emocional, algunas lágrimas por aquí y por allá, risas, momentos de impotencia y mucha reflexión. Y creo que está de más, pero si me lo preguntan, les responderé como siempre: “Sino la han visto, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.
