I have several days watching short videos and memes about this movie where they promised that it would traumatize if it was seen or, at least, I would have several stomach movements as a consequence. Well, I must confess that either I must be out of my mind or those who saw it did not know what they were getting into (not to say that they are “weak” minded). We know very well that there are colors for every taste, and like all things, the film industry is no exception. Genres and subgenres abound for everyone. Although it is true, this type of story had not been seen for a long time in western cinemas. We are talking about the recent film starring Demi Moore, The Substance, directed by french Coralie Fargeat.
Tengo varios días viendo vídeos cortos y memes sobre esta película donde prometían que traumaría si se llegaba a ver o, por lo menos, tendría varios movimientos estomacales como consecuencia. Pues debo confesar que, o debo estar mal de la cabeza o, quienes la vieron no sabían dónde se estaban metiendo (para no decir que están “débiles” de mente). Sabemos muy bien que, para gustos hay colores, y como todas las cosas, la industria del cine no es la excepción. Géneros y subgéneros abundan para cada quien. Aunque sí es cierto, este tipo de historia tenía mucho tiempo que no se veía por los cines occidentales. Hablamos de la reciente trama protagonizada por Demi Moore, La Sustancia, dirigida por la francesa Coralie Fargeat.
It is a narrative of drama and body horror. And to be honest, I don't really like this genre, but the internet did its thing and convinced me; there have been few movies with this theme that I have liked: The Human Centipede (the first one I saw and loved), Tanatomorphosis, both ZERO RECOMMENDED for weak stomachs and, my favorite, The Skin I Live In (I'll write about it soon).And in case you still don't get it, I'll explain a little bit what body horror is.It is a sub-genre of horror that, instead of seeking to “empathize or sympathize” with that “dark side” of the psyche and our emotions, seeks to brush that limit in a totally opposite way, doing everything in a grotesque way, seeking to create impact with transformations that we would not expect.
Se trata de una narrativa de drama y terror corporal. Y para serles sincera, no me llama mucho la atención este género, pero es que internet hizo lo suyo y me convenció; pocas han sido las películas de está temática que me han gustado: El Ciempiés Humano (la primera que vi y amé), Tanatomorfosis, ambas CERO RECOMENDADAS para estómagos débiles y, mi favorita, La piel que habito (pronto les escribo de ella). Y por si aun no captan, les explico un poco qué es terror/horros corporal. Es un subgénero del terror que, en vez de buscar “empatizar o simpatizar” con ese “lado oscuro” de la psique y nuestras emociones, buscar rozar ese límite de forma totalmente opuesta, haciendo todo de manera grotesca, buscando crear impacto con transformaciones que no esperaríamos.
Argument.
One of the desires of humanity is eternal youth and beauty. Our protagonist, Elisabeth, is promised a better version of herself thanks to a substance that reproduces her genes and a new, more perfect and beautiful her is born. Pretty good and simple, isn't it? Well, let's add an important reminder: they should always swap every week and never forget that they are one and the same person. Just as simple, it can't go wrong.
Argumento.
Uno de los deseos de la humanidad es la juventud y belleza eterna. A nuestra protagonista, Elisabeth le prometen una mejor versión de ella misma gracias a una sustancia que reproduce sus genes y nace una nueva ella, más perfecta y hermosa. Muy bueno y sencillo, ¿no? Bueno, agreguemos un recordatorio importante: siempre deben intercambiar cada semana y jamás olvidar que son una misma persona. Igual de sencillo, no puede salir mal.
Addiction.
The obvious message, we'll skip it for now. The “easy way out” that Elisabeth found, slowly begins to take its toll on her. Her alter, Sue, begins to see the fruits of her beauty and perfection, wanting to spend more and more time awake. This affects Elisabeth, as she does not receive the doses she needs to be able to regenerate herself and, at the same time, regenerate Sue; so every time Sue takes more time than she should, Elisabeth “dries up” and gets much older.
Adicción.
El obvio mensaje, nos lo saltamos de momento. La “salida fácil” que encontró Elisabeth, poco a poco le empieza a pasar factura. Su alter, Sue, empieza a ver los frutos de su belleza y perfección, queriendo pasar cada vez más tiempo despierta. Esto afecta a Elisabeth, ya que no recibe las dosis que necesita para poder regenerarse ella y, a la vez, regenerar a Sue; así que cada vez que Sue toma más tiempo del debido, Elisabeth se va “secando” y envejeciendo muchísimo más.
Duality and fragmentation.
Remember that important caveat: they are the same person. Whatever happens bad to Sue when she wakes up, happens to Elisabeth when she wakes up, and vice versa. We see how Elisabeth's vision of herself is gradually affected, having sudden outbursts that end in depression. As time goes by, Elisabeth gets older and uglier because of Sue, she makes sure that Sue gets fat thanks to grotesque amounts of food (not nice to see how she prepared it). Another reason why Sue would steal more of Elisabeth's days. The internal fight to recapture who she was becomes stronger and stronger due to ambition and addiction.
Dualidad y fragmentación.
¿Recuerdan ese aviso importante?: son la misma persona. Lo que le pase malo a Sue despierta, le sucede a Elisabeth cuando despierte y viceversa. Vemos cómo poco a poco va afectado en Elisabeth la visión de sí, teniendo repentinos arrebatos que terminan en depresión. Al ir pasando el tiempo, Elisabeth se va volviendo más vieja y fea por culpa de Sue, ella se encarga de que Sue engorde gracias a cantidades grotescas de comida (nada agradable de ver cómo la preparaba). Otra razón por la que Sue se robaría más días de Elisabeth. La pelea interna por retomar quién era, se vuelve cada vez más y más fuerte debido a la ambición y la adicción.
The film itself is a satire on feminism and self-esteem. That desire -almost obsessive- of many women to look young, beautiful and successful, almost always leads to ruin (especially in the fame industry). A woman will remain a valuable commodity as long as she looks beautiful, sexy and young. Not to mention the counterpart of drug abuse which, if you think about it, is what describes every “personality”. On the one hand, Elisabeth's depression, apathy at a certain point, uncontrollable anger, self-hatred for what she created and out of control; on the other, Sue's adrenaline, excitement, pleasure and selfishness can be seen as the before and after of each dose of the drug. Elisabeth's few moments of lucidity are failed attempts to leave all that aside, but her ego is stronger and she prefers the world to see her “perfect” alter.
La película en sí es una sátira al feminismo y a la autoestima. Ese deseo -casi obsesivo- de muchas mujeres por verse joven, hermosa y exitosa, casi siempre lleva a la ruina (sobre todo, en la industria de la fama). La mujer seguirá siendo una mercancía valiosa mientras se vea bella, sexy y joven. Sin mencionar la contraparte del abuso de drogas que, si se piensa bien, es lo que describe cada “personalidad”. Por una parte, la depresión, apatía en cierto punto, la ira incontrolable, el odio a sí misma por lo que creó y el descontrol de Elisabeth; por otra, la adrenalina, la emoción, el placer y el egoísmo de Sue, puede verse como el antes y después de cada dosis de la droga. Los pocos momentos de lucidez de tiene Elisabeth, son intentos fallidos por dejar todo eso de lado, pero el ego puede más y prefiere que el mundo vea su alter “perfecto”.
What people will say, what they will think, how the world perceives us, will always gnaw at the mind of many people; this leads them to take actions that are not proper to the individual. Many people, in this case women, have it more complicated than others, because of their self-esteem and self-perception. We see this clearly during a few minutes in which Elisabeth sees herself as a decrepit old woman and tries, uselessly, to look younger and prettier for her date, but Sue's image is still there reminding her that time takes its toll. Obviously, she fails to beautify herself and goes into depression, bingeing on food.
El qué dirán, qué pensarán, cómo nos percibe el mundo, siempre roerá la mente de muchas personas; esto conlleva a tomar acciones que no son propias del individuo. Muchas personas, en este caso mujeres, la tienen más complicado que otras, por su autoestima y autopercepción. Lo vemos claramente durante unos minutos en el que Elisabeth se ve a sí misma como una vieja decrepita e intenta, inútilmente, verse más joven y bonita para su cita, pero la imagen de Sue sigue ahí recordándole que el tiempo pasa factura. Obvio, falla en embellecerse y entra en depresión, dándose atracones de comida.
Now, whether it's a good film or not?, I owe it to you because, as I mentioned before, I'm not a big fan of this subgenre (oddly enough), but I did really like the undertone and the message. By this I don't mean that I didn't enjoy it, I just... feel that this kind of “aesthetic” doesn't fill my expectations; it would have to be deeper in the story and with some twist for me to love it. Yes, it bored me. So I could tell you that I watched it out of simple morbid curiosity. Whoever likes this theme, I applaud them and my respects, but I don't share the cybernauts' idea that it was an overwhelming film and that it has become the new best horror movie.
Ahora, ¿si es buen film o no?, se lo debo porque, como mencioné antes, no soy muy fan de este subgénero (extrañamente), pero sí me gustó mucho el trasfondo y el mensaje. Con esto no quiero decir que no lo haya disfrutado, simplemente… siento que este tipo de “estética” no llena mis expectativas; tendría que ser más profunda la historia y con algún giro para que me encante. Sí, me aburrió. Así que podría decirles que la vi por simple morbo. A quien le guste esta temática, le aplaudo y mis respetos, pero no comparto la idea de los cibernautas sobre que era un film abrumador y que se ha vuelto la nueva mejor película de horror.

Creo que estamos en sintonía, también la vi por el bum y la terminé por morbo. No es mi género favorito y tampoco la volveré a ver.
Es una de las producciones que tengo pendiente de ver. Es más la debo ver. Sea como sea jajajaja.
El tema es muy llamtivo. El concepto tambien es muy peculiar. Para mi es un film que exterioriza varios puntos llamativos de la Sociedad moderna.
