Today in this post I want to talk about one of my favorite film genres, cyberpunk. I will make reference to what I think are the 4 great works of cinema of this genre with the idea of delving into each film in the future, I hope you like the post.
Cyberpunk is a subgenre of science fiction, known for reflecting dystopian visions of the future in which advanced technology is combined with a low standard of living. Originally the term cyberpunk was used to refer to the literary movement that emerged during the 1980s but today we will talk about the cyberpunk genre in film.
The cyberpunk genre combines elements of science fiction and noir fiction, and has produced some truly iconic films over the years. Here is my selection of four films that stand out as what I believe to be the best of the best in the cyberpunk genre are "Blade Runner," "The Matrix," "Ghost in the Shell," and "Akira."
"Blade Runner," directed by Ridley Scott and released in 1982, is widely regarded as one of the best science fiction films of all time. Set in a dystopian Los Angeles in 2019, the film explores the relationship between humans and artificially created beings known as replicants. The film's stunning visuals and thought-provoking themes, such as the nature of humanity and the ethics of artificial intelligence, have had a profound impact on the genre. The sequel, Blade Runner 2049, is noteworthy and I would say a great achievement considering that it is no easy job trying to make a sequel to a film as iconic as Blade Runner 35 years later.
"The Matrix," directed by the Wachowski brothers and released in 1999, revolutionized the action genre and popularized the concept of "the matrix," a simulated reality used to control humanity. The film's iconic action sequences and its exploration of the nature of reality have had a lasting impact on popular culture. It also has its sequels, which in my opinion cannot compare to this one, although I don't consider them bad films.
"Ghost in the Shell" directed by Mamoru Oshii and released in 1995, is a landmark anime film that explores the relationship between the human mind and technology. The film's stunning animation and thought-provoking themes, such as the nature of consciousness and the merging of human and machine, have had a huge impact on the cyberpunk genre. Ghost in the Shell delves into philosophical questions such as "What makes us human?" or "What is intelligence?" while still being entertaining.
"Akira," also directed by Katsuhiro Otomo and released in 1988, is widely regarded as one of the best anime films of all time. Set in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo, the film explores a world where technology and psychic abilities have advanced to near destruction. The film's stunning animation and thought-provoking themes, such as the dangers of uncontrolled technological progress, have had a huge impact on the cyberpunk genre.
In conclusion, I consider "Blade Runner," "Matrix," "Ghost in the Shell" and "Akira" to be the best cyberpunk films of all time, as they represent the genre in a unique and powerful way, and their impact on the genre is undeniable. Each of these films explores the relationship between humans and technology in a different way, but all are thought-provoking and visually stunning.
It's worth noting that all 4 of these films are from the 80's and 90's, which makes me think about the genre and why there are no great cyberkunk films from the 20th century.
I must not forget to briefly mention Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022) which is a series, not a movie, but I think it is a great example of the recent cyberpunk genre and is also a recommended series for fans of the cyberpunk genre.

There's no genre I love most. Fantasy is great. Dark fantasy is even better. Sci-Fi is cool, but cyberpunk has something special that I can't explain. I would say there are two more masterpieces that are already classics: Robocop and The Fifth Element.

The movies you mention are wonderful, I really enjoyed Blade Runner I saw it many times and the truth is that I loved it, the current one I haven't seen, it's hard for me to get the taste for it, I hope to see it soon.

The four films you mention have served as the basis for any story based on cyberpunk; perhaps The Matrix is one of those productions that fed on the other three films, but there is no doubt that the ingenuity of creating all those stories is in itself a path that should be traveled by those who want to know more about this genre.
I have a soft spot for Blade Runner and I hope that the next series that will surely serve as a sequel to "2049" will also be as good as the two films already released.
