A couple of computer and programming savvy friends find an old horror game. An eighties computer video game, which, proposes to restart with a lot of money to the person who completes it, Kayla, who has many economic problems, sees this as the perfect opportunity to get out of all his debts. However, the game is much more than it seems at first glance. Now this girl must face reality-altering decisions, her difficult past and a curse that surrounds the game.

This movie for a few weeks I wanted to see and finally I was given the opportunity, so I did not hesitate to do so. Overall I liked it, it has details that appeal plus the premise is certainly charismatic.
I will not deny it, one of the reasons I wanted to see the movie was because of the participation of Asa Butterfield, I have already seen him in other series and movies, I think he is a good actor, although in this film he does not have so much relevance, which is not entirely sad but I was disappointed.
Our main protagonist is Kayla, a girl with a traumatic past and an extremely bad family and economic situation. Years ago her younger brother died under her care, which led to the fragmentation of her family. Her mother, unable to cope with the death of her little boy, threw herself into abandonment and Kayla, full of guilt, had to drop out of college and take charge of everything at home. This game is more than an opportunity for her, it represents a future, because with this game she will not only solve her economic problems, she will also provide professional help to her mother and finish college, that is, her motivation is not merely selfish, she just wants to take control of her life. What she doesn't expect is that things won't be so easy.
I love that during the story our protagonist has to face her past and the guilt that haunts her, even reliving the moment in which she failed, for her this is very liberating because it allows her to move forward. The entire game consists of levels that she will have to overcome in order to face the final boss, each one of them represents a trauma that will increase in intensity as she goes up. Which is fascinating because it prepares you to get the reward that the curse offers, something more valuable than money, the codes to benefit from this, after all this is a game, macabre, but a game at last.
During much of the story I kept thinking about Bandersnatch, the Black Mirror movie, if we analyze it has much resemblance to that world, symbols, music, aesthetics, a possible criticism of technology and the interaction between the game and its players, I'm not sure, but if someone told me that this film belongs to Black Mirror universe would not seem impossible to me, of course it would not be part of my favorite chapters. However, it would make sense.
I think what I liked most about the film is its aesthetics along with its soundtrack. The symbols play an important role in the whole movie, that's why they are included in many details of the story, like the shape of the buildings, this seems ingenious to me, because it helps to suggest the audience even before the revelation. The duo of green and black, to represent the game I love, and many productions have already put in our heads that these colors represent programming codes, and this one keeps the tradition. The music really helps, in a way the protagonist is inside a game, and using an eighties game theme in the soundtrack is logical and attractive.
The ending, I especially liked it because there is no demonic entity controlling everything, sure, it's a curse but they are different elements, also, another reason is that I didn't expect it, I had the firm belief that she wouldn't survive the spell, although she would survive the fight with the boss, and that she gained powers is an interesting bonus. It all looks like there will be a sequel that I won't hesitate to watch.
In conclusion, if I recommend the movie it is interesting. I would describe it as a light but entertaining horror, it's good for a weekend afternoon, plus if you like Black Mirror, this movie reminds you enough of it.

Hey there,
I saw this movie only halfway because I got uninterested at some point. It caught my eye because I saw Asa Butterfield but I didn't think it was that great. I think I lost interest when they started to explain what was happening and those tapes were coming out of Asa's mouth. From your review though, it sounds like the movie turned out to be good in the end. A couple of other people have also said that it's not half bad. I guess I judged the movie to quickly.
Thanks for this review. I guess I'll go back and complete this movie!
I do not think it is a marvel but it is interesting. Thanks for commenting !

I found this film to be very flawed although it was an interesting concept. In the end I think they could have done it a number of different ways to make it more plausible. The whole idea that the game can find you and control the physical world including people that aren't actually involved in the game was a bit too far-fetched for me.
Also the way that Kayla and her friend are so casual about the game that they actually forget that a round is coming up is just silly. She literally saw someone kill themselves because of the game the night before and oh, I guess I just lost track of time!
You're right, it fails in many aspects, especially because it's not very serious about itself, and of course its premise is interesting and could have led to something better. However, I think its intention was to create a lighter horror, as to pass the time, it's one of those movies not to give them too much thought.
