A few days ago, I was watching TikTok and a clip from a movie popped up that instantly caught my attention. When I checked the comments, I discovered that it was Hidden Figures, a 2016 film about three African-American women who made significant contributions to NASA's space program in the 1960s.

I love it when a movie is based on real events because, even though I know that certain elements are often dramatized to reinforce the emotional narrative, the essence of what happened remains. In this case, these women were instrumental in helping the United States gain ground in the space race. And at a time when women were practically confined to the home, being a woman was already difficult, but being an African American woman was even more so. That's why I value their contribution to humanity so much; I feel that everyone should see this film at least once in their lifetime.
The film focuses mainly on Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, three women who, from their respective trenches, brought intelligence, discipline, and determination to one of the most important scientific projects of the 20th century. Brilliant women whose names are finally beginning to receive the recognition they always deserved.

Speaking of them, I want to highlight the actresses who play them. First is Taraji P. Henson, who brings Katherine to life. In my opinion, she gives a tremendously powerful performance. Her ability to express frustration, determination, and mathematical genius without going overboard is one of the pillars of the film. Honestly, there were many moments when I identified with her, and that gives the character incredible credibility.

Then there is Octavia Spencer, who plays Dorothy. She simply shines every time she appears on screen. I love how she builds a quiet leader: someone who protects her own, who anticipates change, and who conveys emotional strength without the need for grandiloquent speeches. Her Oscar nomination was more than justified.

From my point of view, this film manages to bring to light historical figures who were ignored for decades, and it does so in an accessible, inspiring way with performances that elevate the material.
