Allá por el 2001, dos trabajadores de renombre en Nickelodeon empezaron a maquinar una idea que, según cuentan ellos, la inspiración llegó con un dibujo y posiblemente un documental. Tiempo después esas dos personas, Michael Dante DiMartino y Brayan Konietzko, terminarían produciendo una de las series más exitosas del canal televisivo… Hola hiver random que llegue a leer esto, es este post voy a hablar de:

En el 2005 se estrena en televisión la primera temporada, conocido como libro agua y la que le da inicio al viaje de Aang en un mundo en guerra. Contando con una buena aceptación por parte de la audiencia, asegurando su permanencia en canal por varios años más; incluso desembocando un en un montón de productos que complementarían y expandirían su universo: secuelas, comics, novelas y una mala película live action. Pero ¿Que hace a Avatar una serie increíble? Vamos a verlo:

In 2005, the first season, known as the water book, premiered on television and began Aang's journey in a world at war. It was well received by the audience, ensuring its permanence on the channel for several more years; even leading to a lot of products that would complement and expand its universe: sequels, comics, novels and a bad live action movie. But what makes Avatar an amazing series? Let's take a look at it:

Una Premisa potente / A Powerful Premise

La premisa de la serie se va haciendo compleja mientras más te vas adentrando en el mundo, básicamente establece que el mundo está dividido en cuatro naciones, una por cada elemento, y que se encuentran en una guerra iniciada por la nación del fuego; el único que pude detener esta guerra es el avatar, que además es el único que puede dominar los cuatro elementos. A eso se le añaden más cosas como que el avatar reencarna cada vez que muere, y que el mundo está poblado no solo por humanos con capacidad de controlar los elementos, sino también de criaturas de fantasía y espíritus.

Analicemos brevemente el capítulo uno. Desde el primer segundo que empieza el capítulo muestran una introducción más que increíble y necesaria, pues siendo una serie dirigida a un público de niños de 6 a 11 años (y cualquiera que la vea), explicar su mundo complejo es muy útil para que cualquier espectador digiera la trama de la serie; además que dicha introducción que se repite en cada capítulo, maneja de manera excelente lo visual, tanto es así que no se necesita acotar en ningún momento de la narrativa que hay personas capaces de controlar los elementos.

The premise of the series becomes more complex the deeper you get into the world, basically it states that the world is divided into four nations, one for each element, and that they are in a war initiated by the fire nation; the only one who can stop this war is the avatar, who is also the only one who can master the four elements. Added to that, the avatar is reincarnated every time he dies, and the world is populated not only by humans with the ability to control the elements, but also by fantasy creatures and spirits.

Let's briefly analyze chapter one. From the first second that the chapter starts, they show a more than incredible and necessary introduction, because being a series aimed at an audience of children from 6 to 11 years old (and anyone who watches it), explaining its complex world is very useful for any viewer to digest the plot of the series; in addition, this introduction, which is repeated in each chapter, handles the visuals in an excellent way, so much so that it is not necessary to point out at any time in the narrative that there are people capable of controlling the elements.

Desde el principio con conversaciones de los personajes vamos entendiendo lo que ha pasado, acompañando todo con el humor para hacer más carismático a los personajes. Se aprecia que Aang es aun un chico pequeño que quiere divertirse, Katara una chica amable que quiere abrirse a lo desconocido, Sokka un sarcástico y quejumbroso joven que trata de ser un buen guerrero, y, Zuko un enemigo de carácter fuerte con una gran obsesión por capturar al Avatar. Mientras más avanzan los capítulos más podemos ver a estos personajes, mientras nos sumergimos en el mundo de Avatar. Una forma más concreta de decir su premisa seria: Un niño de otra era, que hora debe cargar con la responsabilidad de derrotar a una nación poderosa y concluir una guerra; emprendiendo un viaje solo con la ayuda de dos nuevos amigos para aprender a controlar sus poderes, mientras son perseguidos por un príncipe exiliado que hará lo que sea por capturarlo.

From the beginning with conversations of the characters we understand what has happened, accompanying everything with humor to make the characters more charismatic. We can see that Aang is still a small boy who wants to have fun, Katara is a kind girl who wants to open up to the unknown, Sokka is a sarcastic and complaining young man who tries to be a good warrior, and Zuko is a strong-willed enemy with a great obsession to capture the Avatar. The more the chapters progress the more we get to see of these characters, as we immerse ourselves in the world of Avatar. A more concrete way of stating its premise would be: A boy from another era, who must now bear the responsibility of defeating a powerful nation and ending a war; embarking on a journey alone with the help of two new friends to learn to control his powers, while being pursued by an exiled prince who will do anything to capture him.

Un Equilibrio Técnico / A Technical Balance

En esta serie que siempre se hablaba del equilibrio, resulta curioso es una de las únicas series que logró crear un equilibrio armónico entre sus inspiraciones asiáticas, y principalmente en el estilo de dibujo que presentan los personajes. Fácilmente pudieron haberse inclinado por la idea de crear un cartoon con rasgos típicos del anime japonés, como se hizo con Teen Titans (un ejemplo de eso son las expresiones en momentos de humor de los titanes); pero los creadores concibieron el estilo del ultimo maestro calvo, con los suficientes rasgos japoneses para parecen una anime, y lo suficientemente americano como para ser visto también como un cartoon. El estilo de avatar no está buscando emular tal cual los cánones del anime/manga de la época, o del comic americano; un ejemplo son los ojos de los personajes, son más grandes que las de un cartoon de súper héroes occidental, pero son más pequeños que las de un chico anime japonés.

Donde también se puede apreciar el estilo es en las proporciones de sus cuerpos (pero no puedo confirmar nada porque no he estudiado su estilo), o la forma de dibujar la nariz.

In this series, which always talked about balance, it is curious that it is one of the only series that managed to create a harmonious balance between its Asian inspirations, and mainly in the drawing style presented by the characters. They could have easily leaned towards the idea of creating a cartoon with typical Japanese anime features, as was done with Teen Titans (an example of that are the expressions in moments of humor of the titans); but the creators conceived the style of the last bald master, with enough Japanese features to look like an anime, and enough American to be seen as a cartoon as well. The avatar style is not seeking to emulate the canons of the anime/manga of the time, or the American comic; an example is the eyes of the characters, they are larger than those of a western superhero cartoon, but are smaller than those of a Japanese anime boy.

Where you can also appreciate the style is in the proportions of their bodies (but I can't confirm anything because I haven't studied their style), or the way they draw the nose.

Un Mundo Construido Por Detalles / A World Built By Details

Cualquier persona es capaz de crear un mundo de ficción, solo hace falta un pizca de imaginación para construirlo; pero no cualquiera sería capaza de crear un mundo sumamente pulido en detalles y contexto, el mundo de Avatar aunque recién el espectador se introduce en él, no deja de recordarte que hay mucha más historia detrás de todo.

Por otro lado, el mundo del avatar Aang no es tan complicado debido a que como ya dije, es la primera vez que lo vemos. Podríamos decir que solo tres cosas notorias a simple vista hacen que sea diferente al nuestro: las artes control, los animales y los espíritus. De hecho, hay inspiraciones culturales muy notorias de nuestro mundo, y es ahí donde el equipo de producción se lució a la hora de diseñar y escribir la historia.

Hay cosas que se pueden apreciar claramente como las ropas y la arquitectura de las ciudades y pueblos, un ejemplo es el castillo del rey tierra en la cuidad de Ba Sing Se o los templos de los nómadas aire. Incluso cosas no tan evidentes como la caligrafía que mayormente se usaba en el show, la antigua caligrafía china, que además era cuidada de ser usada con los implementos correctos, y la caligrafía correcta dependiendo de las personas; incluso tuvieron un calígrafo como consultor.

Anyone is capable of creating a fictional world, it just takes a bit of imagination to build it; but not everyone would be capable of creating a world highly polished in detail and context, the world of Avatar although the viewer is just introduced into it, does not fail to remind you that there is much more history behind everything.

On the other hand, the world of the avatar Aang is not so complicated because, as I said, it is the first time we see it. We could say that only three things noticeable to the naked eye make it different from ours: the control arts, the animals and the spirits. In fact, there are very noticeable cultural inspirations from our world, and that is where the production team excelled in designing and writing the story.

There are things that can be clearly appreciated as the clothes and architecture of the cities and towns, an example is the castle of the earth king in the city of Ba Sing Se or the temples of the air nomads. Even things not so obvious like the calligraphy that was mostly used in the show, the ancient Chinese calligraphy, which was also careful to be used with the correct implements, and the correct calligraphy depending on the people; they even had a calligrapher as a consultant.

Incluso las coreografías de las peleas que estaban inspiradas por el cine chino, y las artes control estaban inspiradas en artes marciales que fueran más acordes a sus filosofías: el aire control en Ba Gua, el agua control del Tai Chi, la tierra control en el Hung Gar y el fuego control en el bei shaoling. Incluso el equipo de desarrollo tenía un consultor cultural que revisaba los guiones.

Even the fight choreography was inspired by Chinese cinema, and the control arts were inspired by martial arts that were more in line with their philosophies: air control in Ba Gua, water control in Tai Chi, earth control in Hung Gar and fire control in bei shaoling. Even the development team had a cultural consultant who reviewed the scripts.

Un Protagonista Humano / A Human Protagonist

Aang como protagonista funciona más que de manera excelente, su personalidad carismática e infantil permite a la audiencia más joven identificarse con él; en ese aspecto Aang se desenvuelve muy bien, pues los conflictos que en este recaen, varias veces han tratado sobre la presión de ser el avatar o meterse en problemas por su inmadurez. Aparte de todo eso, siempre estuvo su mayor inconveniente que tuvo en los episodios finales, el de si debía o no matar al villano final para detener la guerra, pues iba en contra de las enseñas del hinduismo tibetano de los nómadas aire que aprendió desde pequeño.

Aang as a protagonist works more than excellent, his charismatic and childish personality allows the younger audience to identify with him; in that aspect Aang performs very well, because the conflicts that fall on him, several times have dealt with the pressure of being the avatar or getting into trouble for his immaturity. Apart from all that, there was always his major drawback that had final episodes, whether or not to kill the final villain to stop the war, because it was against the teachings of Tibetan Hinduism of the air nomads that he learned since he was a child.

Personajes Bien Escritos / Well-Written Characters

Seré breve en esta parte, cada personaje principal tiene una historia que contar o algo que aportar a la trama; hay quienes aprenden de sus errores y mejoran como persona, y, los que ayudan a otros a avanzar en sus problemas. Están personajes como Katara y Toph que tuvieron que demostrar su fuerza; o Sokka, quien buscaba ser un gran guerrero sin ser lo suficientemente hábil, pero destacando también otras cualidades; y Zuko, que tuvo el mejor desarrollo de la serie.

I will be brief in this part, each main character has a story to tell or something to contribute to the plot; there are those who learn from their mistakes and improve as a person, and, those who help others to advance in their problems. There are characters like Katara and Toph who had to prove their strength; or Sokka, who sought to be a great warrior without being skilled enough, but highlighting other qualities as well; and Zuko, who had the best development in the series.

Conclusión / Conclusion

Después de ver todo esto, creo que está más que claro que la genialidad de la serie Avatar radica en el cuidado y atención que le dieron al momento de construirla. Los autores no solo te lanzan a un mundo desconocido para que se vaya descubriendo, crean la sensación de que ya todo es conocido y que hay mucha historia detrás. En fin, si te gusta el anime esta serie es para ti, si te gustan los cartoons también; sobre todo si tienes afición a las culturas asiáticas de diferentes regiones (principalmente china). Y si tienes una cuenta de Netflix y no sabes que ver solo, o con tu familia, esta serie es perfecta para pasar el rato; y si gustas puedes ver también su secuela… Si te gustó mi análisis y conoces a alguien que haya visto la serie puedes mostrárselo, eso es todo hasta luego.

After seeing all this, I think it is more than clear that the genius of the Avatar series lies in the care and attention that was given to its construction. The authors not only throw you into an unknown world to be discovered, they create the feeling that everything is already known and that there is a lot of history behind it. Anyway, if you like anime this series is for you, if you like cartoons too; especially if you are fond of Asian cultures from different regions (mainly Chinese). And if you have a Netflix account and you don't know what to watch alone, or with your family, this series is perfect to pass the time; and if you like you can also watch its sequel...
