The Strangers Chapter 1 terminó siendo un desastre total y cuando digo desastre no estoy exagerando para nada, esto es un remake del original de 2008 pero sin ninguna de las cosas que hicieron que esa película funcionara en primer lugar y eso me molesta un montón porque tuvieron presupuesto, actores y la oportunidad de hacer algo diferente pero decidieron ir por lo más seguro y aburrido posible. La película sigue a Maya y Ryan una pareja que lleva como cinco años juntos y están manejando hacia Portland porque ella consiguió un trabajo como arquitecta, paran en un pueblo raro llamado Venus donde toda la gente los mira como si fueran extraterrestres o algo así y obvio su carro se daña misteriosamente justo después de comer en la cafetería más sospechosa del mundo, entonces terminan quedándose en una cabaña en medio de la nada que supuestamente es un Airbnb y ahí es donde empieza todo el rollo de los tres psicópatas con máscaras que los empiezan a joder toda la noche hasta que los matan o casi porque Maya sobrevive al final. Suena familiar verdad porque es prácticamente la misma historia del original pero peor ejecutada y con personajes que son bien tontos como estos dos que no tienen ni media neurona funcionando correctamente.

Lo peor de esta película es que Maya y Ryan son los protagonistas más idiotas que he visto en una peli de terror, desde el principio toman decisiones que no tienen ningún sentido como cuando Ryan decide dejar a Maya sola en la cabaña para ir al pueblo en una motocicleta que ni siquiera es de ellos solo porque se le olvidó su inhalador en el carro y ella simplemente dice ok vete tranquilo aquí me quedo solita después de que una loca ya vino a tocar la puerta como tres veces preguntando por alguien llamado Tamara. Quien en su sano juicio haría eso en serio quien dejaría a su novia sola en medio de la nada después de que algo raro está pasando pero bueno eso no es lo peor porque Maya decide que es buena idea ponerse a fumar vainas raras y empezar a hacer un montón de ruido cuando sabe que hay alguien afuera siendo un bicho raro. En la peli original la tensión funcionaba porque los personajes se comportaban como personas normales que estaban aterrorizadas pero aquí Maya actúa como si estuviera en su casa un martes cualquiera sin preocupaciones en el mundo y eso mata completamente cualquier tensión que la película intenta construir porque como voy a sentir miedo por alguien que claramente no tiene instinto de supervivencia.

Otro problema gigante es que cambiaron la dinámica de la pareja comparado con el original y eso le quita muchísimo a la historia porque en la película de 2008 había esta tensión incomoda entre ellos porque el acababa de proponerle matrimonio y ella lo rechazó entonces toda esa incomodidad era algo que perturbaba a todo lo que estaba pasando, pero en esta version Maya y Ryan estan super enamorados y felices y lo único que causa tensión si es que se puede llamar así, es que llevan cinco años juntos y no se han casado lo que a nadie le importa en esta época donde hay parejas que llevan décadas juntas sin casarse y están perfectamente bien entonces pretender que eso es algún tipo de conflicto dramático es ridículo. La película también mete un montón de personajes secundarios raros como el mecánico que los mira de forma siniestra, los niños pálidos con panfletos religiosos y la mesera que parece estar involucrada en algo turbio pero nunca te dicen si realmente están conectados con los asesinos o no, es como si quisieron hacer ver que todo el pueblo conspiraba, pero dejaron un montón de cosas sin resolver que probablemente van a explicar en las secuelas y eso me parece una forma super floja porque estas obligando a la gente a ver dos películas más solo para entender que demonios estaba pasando en esta.

Las escenas de suspenso son predecibles y usan todos los clichés baratos del género como el susto falso del triturador de basura o cuando Maya se esconde en el closet con la linterna del teléfono prendida apuntando directamente hacia la puerta como si los asesinos fueran ciegos y no pudieran ver la luz saliendo por debajo, hay momentos donde los tres enmascarados salen de la nada como si fueran fantasmas lo que no tiene sentido porque se supone que son humanos normales con máscaras ny o tienen poderes sobrenaturales pero aparecen y desaparecen cuando les conviene a los escritores para crear sustos baratos. La escena donde el tipo de la máscara de saco está sentado detrás de Maya mientras ella toca el piano es un intento obvio de copiar la escena famosa del original donde el tipo está parado detras de Liv Tyler pero aqui no funciona porque Maya esta frente a un espejo gigante entonces si tan solo mirara hacia arriba por dos segundos vería al tipo sentado ahí viéndola como un acosador entonces es imposible tomarlo en serio. Todo se siente tan forzado y conveniente para la trama como cuando Ryan se tuerce el tobillo tropezándose con nada o seaaa solo pasa para que no puedan correr rápido después o cuando su teléfono se rompe y el de Maya desaparece porque obvio no pueden llamar a la policía eso sería demasiado lógico.

El final es el peor, después de todo el sufrimiento Ryan le pide matrimonio a Maya mientras están amarrados a unas sillas con tres psicópatas parados frente a ellos listos para matarlos, la verdad no es nada romántico y encima ella dice que si como si fueran a tener una boda después de esto, bueno lo cierto es que dejan el final abierto para las dos películas que siguen. No voy a decir que The Strangers Chapter 1 es la peor película de terror porque he visto cosas peores pero es decepcionante, los actores no son terribles pero tampoco ayudan mucho, Madelaine Petsch actúa como si estuviera haciendo una parodia de Tik Tok de películas de terror en lugar de una real y Froy Gutierrez solo esta ahí para verse bonito y tomar decisiones tontas toda la noche. Hay como dos o tres escenas que logran crear algo de tensión real como cuando encuentran el pollo muerto colgando del techo o cuando explotan la motocicleta pero eso no es suficiente para salvar una película que no entiende que es lo que hizo que la original funcionara tan bien, no necesitábamos un remake de The Strangers y menos una trilogía entera, solo lo hicieron para hacer dinero rápido aprovechandose del culto que tiene la película original sin poner ningún esfuerzo real, yo le doy un 5.5/10 porque al menos dura solo noventa minutos y tiene como tres escenas decentes pero fuera de eso no recomiendo verla.

The Strangers Chapter 1 ended up being a total disaster and when I say disaster I'm not exaggerating at all, this is a remake of the 2008 original but without any of the things that made that movie work in the first place and that bothers me a ton because they had budget, actors and the opportunity to do something different but decided to go for the safest and most boring thing possible. The movie follows Maya and Ryan a couple who've been together for like five years and are driving to Portland because she got a job as an architect, they stop in this weird town called Venus where all the people look at them like they're aliens or something and obviously their car breaks down mysteriously right after eating at the most suspicious cafeteria in the world, so they end up staying at a cabin in the middle of nowhere that's supposedly an Airbnb and that's where the whole thing with the three psychos with masks starts who begin messing with them all night until they kill them or almost because Maya survives at the end. Sounds familiar right because it's practically the same story as the original but worse executed and with characters who are really dumb like these two who don't have even half a neuron working correctly.

The worst thing about this movie is that Maya and Ryan are the most idiotic protagonists I've seen in a horror movie, from the beginning they make decisions that don't make any sense like when Ryan decides to leave Maya alone in the cabin to go to town on a motorcycle that isn't even theirs just because he forgot his inhaler in the car and she simply says ok go ahead I'll stay here all alone after some crazy lady already came to knock on the door like three times asking for someone called Tamara. Who in their right mind would do that seriously who would leave their girlfriend alone in the middle of nowhere after something weird is happening but well that's not the worst part because Maya decides it's a good idea to start smoking weird stuff and start making a ton of noise when she knows there's someone outside being a weirdo. In the original movie the tension worked because the characters behaved like normal people who were terrified but here Maya acts like she's at home on any Tuesday without a care in the world and that completely kills any tension the movie tries to build because how am I going to feel scared for someone who clearly has no survival instinct.

Another giant problem is that they changed the couple's dynamic compared to the original and that takes away so much from the story because in the 2008 movie there was this uncomfortable tension between them because he had just proposed marriage and she rejected him so all that awkwardness was something that disturbed everything that was happening, but in this version Maya and Ryan are super in love and happy and the only thing that causes tension if you can even call it that, is that they've been together for five years and haven't gotten married which nobody cares about in this era where there are couples who've been together for decades without getting married and are perfectly fine so pretending that's some kind of dramatic conflict is ridiculous. The movie also throws in a bunch of weird secondary characters like the mechanic who looks at them in a sinister way, the pale kids with religious pamphlets and the waitress who seems to be involved in something shady but they never tell you if they're actually connected to the killers or not, it's like they wanted to make it look like the whole town was conspiring, but they left a bunch of things unresolved that they're probably going to explain in the sequels and that seems like a super lazy way because you're forcing people to watch two more movies just to understand what the hell was going on in this one.

The suspense scenes are predictable and use all the cheap clichés of the genre like the fake scare with the garbage disposal or when Maya hides in the closet with the phone flashlight on pointing directly at the door as if the killers were blind and couldn't see the light coming out from underneath, there are moments where the three masked ones come out of nowhere as if they were ghosts which doesn't make sense because they're supposed to be normal humans with masks and they don't have supernatural powers but they appear and disappear when it's convenient for the writers to create cheap scares. The scene where the guy with the sack mask is sitting behind Maya while she plays the piano is an obvious attempt to copy the famous scene from the original where the guy is standing behind Liv Tyler but here it doesn't work because Maya is in front of a giant mirror so if she just looked up for two seconds she'd see the guy sitting there watching her like a stalker so it's impossible to take it seriously. Everything feels so forced and convenient for the plot like when Ryan twists his ankle tripping over nothing or I mean it only happens so they can't run fast afterwards or when his phone breaks and Maya's disappears because obviously they can't call the police that would be too logical.

The ending is the worst, after all the suffering Ryan proposes to Maya while they're tied to chairs with three psychos standing in front of them ready to kill them, the truth is it's not romantic at all and on top of that she says yes as if they're going to have a wedding after this, well the truth is they leave the ending open for the two movies that follow. I'm not going to say that The Strangers Chapter 1 is the worst horror movie because I've seen worse things but it's disappointing, the actors aren't terrible but they don't help much either, Madelaine Petsch acts like she's doing a TikTok parody of horror movies instead of a real one and Froy Gutierrez is just there to look pretty and make dumb decisions all night. There are like two or three scenes that manage to create some real tension like when they find the dead chicken hanging from the ceiling or when they blow up the motorcycle but that's not enough to save a movie that doesn't understand what made the original work so well, we didn't need a remake of The Strangers and much less an entire trilogy, they only did it to make quick money taking advantage of the cult following the original movie has without putting in any real effort, I give it a 5.5/10 because at least it only lasts ninety minutes and has like three decent scenes but other than that I don't recommend watching it.
